Reporter Library Submits Monthly Report A total of 38,795 books were circulated In the Salt Lake county library system during February, a"ecording t6 Mrs Ruth Vine Tyler, county librarian. The Calvin S. Smith library circulated 5.034 books, Midvale headquarters library 4,811 and Plymouth li brary 3,416, to lead the other b ranch es in total circulation. Juevnile books lead in popularity with 19,376 being circulated, with 18,719 reference books coming in second and 10,435 .adult fiction books were t h ird. There was a total of 436 new patron registran ts in Feb ruary and 110 renewed application5, ma king a total of 31,541 appli· ca nts, accordin g to Mrs. Ty ler. ENTERT AIN FOR DAUGHTER Mrs J. C. R'ichards entertained a group of little friends at her home Saturday afternoon. It was t he seventh birth anniversary of her daughter Doreen. The invited guests were: Melrae Bateman, Morris LeFevre, Janice Richards, Nannette Richards, Shirley Greenwood, Jean Smith, Wayne Bateman, Merlene Sundberg and Wa~ ly Bateman all of Sandy; P atricia Dahl. Sally Beckstead, Karen B urkinshaw and Velle Anderson all of West Jordan, and J anet Marlar of East Midvale. Dorene recently returned from the Salt Lake General hospital where she spent 4 months as a patient of the dreaded polio. Everyone expresses their sincere hopes that Dorene will be able to run and play with her little friends on her next birthday. * SANDY BOY TO WED SALT LAKE CITY GIRL Mr & Mrs Wiliam T Hawks, Salt Lake City, announce the a p proaching marriage of their daughter, Winifred Janet, and Robert J Jones, son of Mrs Ann J ones of Sandy, March 22, in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Chapman. Mrs Chapman is the former Miss Phylis Jensen. Noal Jensen returned recently from a trip to Long Beach and "'Culver City, Cal. He also visited with his sister and brother-in-law Mr and Mrs D. 0. Chapman at G allop, New Mexico. Mrs Roberta Silcox entertained at her home in Riverton recently honoring the birth anniversary of her husband Kenneth, and al110 honoring her three brothers, Carl H. and Alfred A. Engstrum, who w ere recently dlschlttged from ser vice, and Robert C. Engstrum,who ts home on leave from the navy. Despain . son of Mr & Mrs Charles W Despain, was discharged at Fort Douglas this w:eek after serving 13 mo-;. with the 1563rd Engineers Co. in the Asiatic Pacific theatre. He wears 1 battle star. T /5 William W Maynard, son of Mr & Mrs Cecil F Hardcastle, was discharged after serving 12 months with the 2018th Ord · nance Maintenance in the Asi· atic-Pacific theatre. He entered service Dec 7, 1943. SANDY SCHOOL NEWS Two entertaining programs were featured last week. The students of Sandy junior high are busily preparing for the music and speech festi va 1 that will be held at the high school March 30. Many fine numbers are being prepared so that we should be well represented. Winners in· the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism essay contest were announced at a special assembly, Wednesday. The first prize of $5.00 went to Gloria Jean Larson, and $3.00 and $2.00 were awarded to LaVon Hughes and Ila Wright for their essays which took second and third pla· ces. Honorable mention was ac· corded Harold Thompson, Marilyn Grunvig, and James Sanderion. Essays were submitted by 96 students and competition for the three prizes was keen. They also visited with Mrs Anna C. Rasmussen and Mrs Oliva Claire at their home in Sandy.
