A17 Forester Presents Year-Round Program Of Tree Preservation ~e troublel Rely New chemical developments have made it possible for farmers to treat fence posts inexpensively and with Httle equipment, and thus prolong the life of the post by several years, Prof J Wlut:ney Floyd, forester of the Utah Extension service, reports. Newest developments in the pre· servation of posts are pentaclllorophenols and fluoride-phenolchromes, sold under various trade names. They are both suitable for well-seasoned or dry posts. The concentrated presvatives are mixed with a Hght penetrating oil such as stove oil, diesel oil or mineral spirits, and then are mixed in a tank. "'For example, when an ordinary 55-gallon barrel has poured into it 20 gallons of diesel o.il and two gallons of concentra.te, and filled with the fence posts placed on end, the solution will rise to approximately 30 inches, which is a good height for the average treatment," Prof Floyd pointed out. Posts are left in the oil until a suitable pene tration has taken place, usually one-half inch. Oil stains are available which, in contact with the oil, ,.vill show color and indicate depth of penetration. Time required to reach this penetration depends upon the temperature and weather, condition and type of the posts. Fluoride-phenok·hrome mny be applied to green posts successfully, either before or after they are placed in the gr01.mcl. J\'o special equipment is needed to apply the preservative, states the forester. Simply paint the material on the peeled post surface and tack a tarpaper protectiop bandage over th e treated porlion. A group of fanners or ranchers desiring in-the-field assistance to preserve fence posts may apply to the countv agent's office. Demonstrations may be conducted in the county to show the various preservative methods necessary for effective preserva~ tion. Prof Floyd added that the USDA farmers' bulletin, "The Preservative Treabnent of Fann Timbers," No 744 is available. FOSSEN'S SCREEN DOORS COMBINATION SCREEN and STORM DOORS PAINTS- STEPLADDERS- ETC.
