" Rio Grande Buys 11 Locomotives And 3 Diesels With record-breaking loads of war freight demanding every ounce of available power, the Rio Grande railroad has just purchased 11 steam locomotives from the Norfolk and Weste1·n 1·ailroad. Several of the engines already have arrived, and been pressed into immediate service. The others are expected shortly. Four of the engines are to be used in passenger service, and 7 for freight movement. The latter are the compound mallet type, and develop 109,000 pounds tractive effort. In addition to the jmportant addition to its fleet of steam power, the Rio Grande has just ordered 3 more of the huge 5,400-horsepower diesel il·eight locomotives.Green Ligh l.
