CorTe.,ondent Funeral Service Set for Today l'or James Muir Funeral services for James A Muir, 86, who died at his home Tuesday morning, following a ling~ ering illness of causes incident to age, will be held Friday; <today) at 3 p m at Sandy First ward chapel, with Bishop Isaac L Sorenson in charge. Friends may call at 415 East First North srteet, Sandy, Friday from 10;30 until time 'of services. Interment will be at Sandy city cemetery, under direction of the Goff mortuary. Mr Muir was bom April 22, 1859, in a dugout in Salt Lake City, the 4th son of Thomas and Isabella Simpson Muir. In 1891 he operated a stone :>Quarry in Little Cottonwood canyon and during this time he quarried stone for the Brigham Young monument. He also quarried the largest monument built of Utah granite in the Mt Olivet cemetery. He oiten said, "I've had a finger .in nearly every piece of granite in the construction of buildings in the city and county." One of his latest works was the carving of the stone for the Winter Quarter...s monument erected in 1936. Since early childhood, Mr Muir has been a worker in the L D S church. He served as bishop of Granite ward for 17 years and also served many years in the Sunday school and M I A. He ful1illed a mission to Southern States in 1895 to 1897 in East Tennessee. .Following his residence in Sandy in October, 1922, he senred many years as a ward teacher and was also supervisor of the High Priests quorum a n d a worker in the ward genealogical committee. H e married J anet Dryburgh M uir Oct 18, 1883 in the Salt Lake 'Endowment house and before her d eath in J anuary, 1943, the couple bad the honor of being the oldest married couple in this part of Salt Lake county. H e is survived by 1 son, George Muir of Granite; 1 brother, Wil- liam Muir of Salt Lake and 1 sister, Mrs Janet James of Salt Lake and also is survived by 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grand- children. Women's Study Group To Meet May 24 • The meeting of 1:he Democratic Women's Study Group of Sandy will be held Thursday, May 24, at 8 p rn at the home. of Mrs J T homas Ostler it is announced by Mrs Eric H Anderson, president, w h o will be in charge. Mrs L C Mitchell will be chair-man of the program with Mrs Milton Cundick as chairman o.f the musical program. Hostesses for the evening will include Mrs Eric H Anderson, Mrs Selma Jacobson, Mrs Madge Stapley and Mrs A R Larson. All members and others interested are invited to attend. It will be noted the meeting has been postponed to May 24, due to the graduation exercises of the Sandy junior high school which will be held May 17 at 8 p m at Sandy junior high school auditorium. Ml's Marian G Welch returned this week from the west coast where she visited for several days. Sandy Seabee Discharged After Long Service C Jay Murray. P 0 1-c of the Seabees ,who recently was transferred from overseas to the San Leandro hospital at Berkeley, Calif, has retwned to his home in Sandy following a medical discharge from the service. Jay enlisted in the Seabees and left for service in May, 1943. He had served at various areas in the Pacific for 16 minths before being returned States. to the United fam ily dinner honoring Jay was given at his home on Thursday evening as he returned. Covers were laid for the guest of honor and Mrs C Jay Murray and daughters, Mr & Mrs J Guy Murray, Mr & Mrs Westel Cochran and sons, Mr & Mrs Dominic Priano and daughter, and Mr & Mrs Arvil Hughes and Mrs Ralph A J Brady of Sandy, and Mr & Mrs Dave Brown of Midvale. Mt. Jordan Stake Holds Conference Elder Joseph F Merrill of the Council of the Twelve Apostles and Elder Roscoe W Eardley of the church welfare committee, represented the general church authority at sessions of Mt Jordan L D S stake conference Saturday and Sunday at Sandy, with President Stanley A Rasmussen in charge. Mrs Helen Baxter was sustained as second counselor in the stake Y W MIA, succeeding Mrs Eleanor Sjoblom. Navy Pilot Spends Leave With Parents Lt ( j g) Stuart Nicholl, pilot in the naval air corps, who has been stationed at \Vatsonville, Calif, arrived here F riday for a 10 days' leave with his parents, Mr & Mrs T W Nicholl of East Sandy. He also visited this week with his sister, Mrs Katherine Wright, and family, at Helper. Lt Nicholl, a graduate of Jordan high school~ enlisted in navy aviation in August l942. He was graduated as an ensign in Decembe:r 1943, and was promoted to Lt (j g) in April 1945. Play Presented At First Ward A fine performance of "The Rescue," a 1-act drama of early days in Utah, was presented at Sandy First ward M I A Tuesday evening as a feature of the "speech arts festiva,l'' under the direction of the MIA presiden- cy. MIDVALE, UTAH Friday, May 4 1945 Page Four "Mother's Tea" Slated Today Band Concert Pleases Patrons The annual "Mothers' Tea" given by girls of the Sandy junior high school will be held today from 1 p m to 3 p m at Sandy junior high school auditorium. Mothers of all girls in the junior high school and the 6th grade are invited to attend, it is announced by G Reed Sanderson, principal. Sandy junior high school music department, under the direc- The theme of the affair will be "Styles Around the Clock," Mrs Elvera B Cooley, home economics instructor . of the school, will be in charge. Decorations will consist of spring flowers and purple and white streamers, with deep yellow daffodils as the centerpieces. The girls of the 9th grade in formal dress, will do the serv~ ing. The girls of the 7th, 8th and 9th grades will present a fashion parade under direction of Mrs ·· Cooley. Refreshments will be served following the program. Mrs Arthur E Peterson, Mrs G Reed Sanderson, Miss Elva Killian and Miss Mary Dean Gilbert will be the pourers. Boys in the junior high school will be excused from school during the afternoon. Lt (j g) R o bert C Lewis, a pilot of the B~24 navy bomber at his overseas base in England, was very much thrilled when he became the proud father of a son, Steven Robert, on March 31, and was promoted to his present rank on April 1. Lt Lewis is the husband of the former Miss Geneva Nicholl oi Sandy. Mrs Vinnie Boulter returned last week from 3 weeks in California, whete she visited wiih her· daughter, Mrs CarlE Holcomb and daughters, Shirley and Jean, in Los Angeles. She also visited with Mr & Mrs George Wood at their home at Santa Monica, Calif. Mrs Esther Boulter returned last week following a 3 week's stay in Califomia where she was the guest of her son and daughter-inlaw, Mr & Mrs Albert Boulter and daughters, Sharon and Sandra, at their home in San Diego. Mrs Betty Ruth Slaughter Morrow is reported to be enjoying her visit at San Antonio, Texas, where she has been the past several weeks, visiting with her husband Cpl D ee L Morrow of the army, who is stationed at Randolph Field, Texas. Mr & Mrs Harold Wright and children, Jean, Marilyn and Kent, of HelPer, spent the week-end visiting with her parents, Mr & Mrs T W Nichol1 and Mr & Mrs Walter Wright. Mrs E Ronald Shaw of Nephi, was a visitor Tuesday evening of her brother, J Thomas Ostler and family.
