The better brains of the country haye been drawn into the ·war administration . Politic:; hat> to be forgotten when a burglar has a gun at your head. Domestic problems have been largely sidetracked in the pubiic mind, as they have seemed superficial compared with the war. Bureaucracy has run wild in .\ Yashington. 'rhe simplest acts in family life have been made complicated issLtes. One has but to read the requirements for cutting up a lJeef in order to comply with price ceilings, to ~:~e~ how confused a local butcher must be. Running a grocery or merchandise store has become a problem so complicated that stores are going out of bu~iness by the thousands. Instead of receiving cooperation· from government b u r ea us, eYeryone is threatened with a $10,000 fine or ten years in jail, or both, as the penalty for enry failure to comply. 'fhe people are heart and · soul for winning the war on the battlefront. Boys from every family are there. We are proud of the results they are accomplishing. The people are also heart and soul for winning the pro{1nction au d distribution problems on the home front to back up our whole war effort. But they are beginning to open their eyes to waste and con:flusion and politics-as-usu al on the home front. 'fhe situation has become fantastic and it is high time that th_ousands .~f bureaucrats who -ne•·e1T raised a chicken, a hog or, a cow, and who never produced an article by manual labor, and who never maintained a . payroll or sold a yard of goods, be replaced by men "'hq_ li:IJ,ow something of the actv·al ,a:g_j problems of production distribution... . 1\ttt\ l3rai'ns collP' + 'h .-<.1 t e top 111 • h th dtlJne~tiC: aff?',,, ey ave .. li as ~ . . . .. lli m:tltltaJ' v ·.. a..cHnrs. n • ~ARE IS A DIFFERENC E Captain Eddi~ Rickenbacker , after returning from his gruelling experience in the South Seas and his im;pection of fighting fronts, is the only man who has said what the American people needed to hear in connection with production problems. In the newspapers and in the news reels he said that if the soldiers could be transferred from the hell holes they occupy on the battlefronts, to our factories, and if the employes in the factories could be transferred to the battlefronts, production in this country would double in thirty days. By the tone of his voice and his expression, you could see that he was disgusted with the Poll:vanna talk about workers at home being classed as filling "battle stations." Captain Rickenbacker emphasized that nothing the peo. ple in this country can do will in any measure equal what the Plenty of Parking Space. 'l'hey don't get overtime pay and they work day and night if necessary. The people agree with Captain Rickenbacker . Just because some of us wear "tin hats" at home, we don't want to become swelled up with the idea that we are filling "battle stations"- we are not. Battle stations are where the bullets :fly and men are dying; where men work a~ long as there is something to do; where orders are obeyed; where overtime pay and profits are not an issue ; and where the perpetuation of liberty and freedom for the individual are the guiding stars. Men Basketl:; all , WE DELIVER Mrs. Grant Gilbert headed for Farragut, Idaho, in a big flash Thursday, and why all the rush? For a very good reason, of course; it's her birthday. And who could think of a better reason to visit with her husband? The subject of air raids has just about been forgotten, but here are some instructions that are a little out of the regualr line of thought: 1. As soon as the bombs start dropping, run like 'ell; it doesn't matter where you run! 2. Wear track shoes if possible . . . if ·the people in front of you are slow, you won't have any trouble getting over and around them. 3. Take advantage of opportunities at hand when the air raid siren sounds; for instance, if in a bakery, grab some pie or cake, and if in a movie, grab a blonde. 4. Always get excited and holler bloody murder. It adds to the fun and confusion, and makes the little kiddies cry. 5. If you should be the victim , of a direct bomb hit, don't go to pieces . . . lie still and you probably won't be noticed. 6. If an incendiary bomb is found in a building, throw gasoline on it. You can't put it out anyway, so you might as well have some fun. If no gasoline is available, throw a bucket of water on _it and lie down. You're dead.
