Jefferson is the father of the Democratic party. In 1808 history recites that he could easily have been reelected for a third term. But his words in declining might well be studied today and contrasted with the ambitions of President Roosevelt. Jefferson said: "I learn, with the liveliest sentiments of gratitude and respect your approbation of my conduct in the various charges which my country has been pleased to confide to me at different times; and especially that the administration of our public affairs, since my accession to the chief magistry, has been so far satisfactory that my continuance in that office, after its present term, would be acceptable to you. "But that I should lay down my charge at a proper period is as much a duty as to have borne it faithfully. "If some termination to the services of the chief magistrate be not fixed by the Constitution, or supplied by practice, his office, nominally for years, will in fact become for life, and history shows how easily that degenerates into an inheritance. "Believing that a representative government responsible at short periods of election is t:Q.at which produces the greatest sum of happiness to mankind, I feel it a duty to do no act which shall essentially imP air that principle, and I should unwillingly be the person who, disregarding the sound precedent set by an illustrious predecessor, should furnish the first example of prolongation beyond the secon)l term of office." Records kept on egg production, mortality, feed consumption, etc. by Utah poultry raisers during the past nine or ten years give us positive evidence of just how important are the problems of breeding, feeding and rearing of chicks, according to Professor Byron Alder, of the Utah State Agricultural college poultry department. High egg producing pullets or well developed market birds are the result of the correct combination of three important factors. First, breeding and incubation; second, conditions under which the birds are brooded and reared; and third, management or housing and feeding during the laying period. Low egg production in the flock is the result when any one of these important factors is faulty in any way. Where possible the poultry man should select the best hens of his own flock, mate them with good pedigreed male birds, and get the chicks through the local hatchery from birds of his own choice from the eggs sent to the hatchery. The brooder should be made up of two parts, the house and the heating unit. At least one-half square foot o.f floor space for each chick should be provided to reduce over crowding. Where soil conditions are kept sanitary, the flock may improve by giving them freedom. This practice of supplying outside runs decreases heavy =------------. Midvale Garage ARNOLD TROESTER, Prop. When the chicks are placed in the brooder, the temperature should be from 95 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and should be held near this point during the first week. By the end of the second week, the temperature should be gradually reduced to about 80 to 85 degrees. Sudden changes and overheating is often very disasterous to small chicks. Artificial heat should be continued in the brooder for four to ten weeks, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
