Show THE SEWI'INEL, MIDVALE, UTAH FORESTER REPORTS MARY TREES SET OUT OH FARMS IH SAL'F LAKE COUNTY Fair WEST JORDAN School Noles Approximately 170,900 small forest trees have been planted on Salt Lake county farms, during the past ten years for windbreaks and woodlot purposes, according to J. Whiteney Floyd, extensj.on forester for the Utah extension service at Logan. These trees, which were planted on 422 different areas within the county, were obtained from the forest nursery maintained by the Utah State Agricultural college for the purpose of supplying planting stock to Utah farmers at a low cost. About 20 different kinds of trees have been planted in this county, but the predominate species have been Siberian elm, Russian olive, blue spruce, green ash, black locust, and black walnut. FRIDAY, FEB. 23, 1940. 1940 Farm Census Indicate s Gain In U.S. Agricull ure changes in dietary habits, decreases in the number of unskilled workers all have affected the 'market for farm crops. The consumption of staple farm crops has declined materially. Motorized il:Jlplements displaced nearly six million horses by 1930. These horses once consumed the products of 30,000,000 acres of farm land. There is an encouraging side of the picture, however, according to Mr. Austin. During the decode from 1919 to 1929 the raising of vegetables also was doubled. The advelft of farm chemurgy promises to provide markets by developing increased uses for farm products in industry. ·Already crops have been developed for industrial use. When the 1940 farm census is complete, it will be of interest to learn what one century of progress has meant to the American farmer.
