Before anyone can raise a hand, someone's happy Christmas is changed to stark tragedy! This year do something to protect your loved ones from the special fire hazards brought into most homes for the holidays. But with the t~e one of two cour~es, bo __ o of the holiday picture. ~-- Of' In recent weeks the statements of some public officials who favor government ownership of the electric power industry, have indicated a new drive to further extend socialism in our country. This coming at a time when the government had indicated it was anxious for the fullest cooperation of the private electric industry, was mystifying and discouraging. But while private power companies and investors were still in a daze of uncertainty as to the reason for ·this seemingly new attack, President Roosevelt cleared the air with a statement to the press, December I, to the effect that present electric production is adequate to meet business and industrial needs. He sought to allay the fear of another controversy between the administration and the utilities. In the event of the United States becoming involved in war, he said he supposed there would have to be anumber of steam stand-by stations linking public and private power sources throughout the nation. But he added there was, no expectation of this country becoming involved in war. The private electric industry is anxious to cooperate with government to the fullest extent. But it is not fair to expect highly-taxed, publicly regulated private plants to compete with tax-subsidized, taxexempt, unregulated government plants. If similar government competition were extended to other lines of business in the United States, private enterprise would be destroyed and we would have socialism or worse. After watching destruction of liberty and individual rights by governments in other nations, our people want to scotch even the possibility of any such danger here. For that reason the president's reassuring statement at this time is particularly important and heartening.
