HIGH-LIGHTING POLITICS W ASHINGTON-Polltics in the nation's capitol is doing exactly what would be expected seven months before the presidential nominating conventions. It is stirring furiously. For a brief period following the outbreak of war abroad and consideration of the neutrality act, candidacies were publicly laid on the shelf. Politics was never far, however from the minds of either the New Dealers, the president, or the opposition. Several developments are now giving shape to the contest for the presidency, particularly in the Democratic camp. The first of these is the definite announcement by campaign managers for Vice President Garner that he is in the race for the nomination whether Mr. Roosevelt goes after a third term or not. The vice president, with the support of many of the Democratic regulars, has a nationwide organization at work corraling d eI egat es. SUBSCRIPTION RA.TE: • ll By DOROTHY OLIVER j 1-............... _,,, ............._ LIGHT OF FREEDOM Those who used to forecast that if a war broke out in Europe sentiment in this country would swiftly grow martial, were apparently mistaken. All the evidence indicates that the great bulk of our citizens are grimly determined that this time we shall stay out-and that, irrespective of our sympathies, Eu· rope's quarrels are not ours. Certainly there is reason in this point of view. For ·if the war goes on for years to a bitter and exhausted end, all that is best in Europe will be submerged, perhaps for generations. It is here, in the western hemisphere where there has been no major war for three-quarters of a century, that the fruits of civilization must be protected and nurtured and developed. We have many big jobs to do at home in these unpredictable times. And the biggest of those jobs is to see that the light of freedom, which has been extinguished in so much of the world, is kept burning here undimmed. il Beckstead Irrigation Company, South Jordan, Uta.h • Midvale Garage ARNOLD TROESTER, Prop. Unless there is a sudden swing of strength to some one candidate, it is almost certain that a majority of the Republican convention delegates will arrive uninstructed, leaving it to the convention to nominate the most able man for the presidency. -oRecently conducted by a metropolitan newspaper was a poll of 25 Democratic congresmen to see who they thought the Republican nominee would be. This revealed Vandenberg leading Taft by a narrow margin in the estimation of Democrats. Three other names appeared-Dewey, ex-President Hoover, and Representative Wadsworth of New York. Neither of the latter two have given any indication of seeking the nomination. Certainly neither have created formal organizations, but Mr. Hoover's name has appeared more and more in politi~al speculation recently because of his wide international background. Mr. Wads: worth, a former senator, Is recognized as one of the abl~st statesmen of the party, but It has .re1 mained for the Demo_crats to tnitate any boom that might come for I him for the presidency.
