B. cows, Caine, according dairy husbandm.an of the Utah State Agricultural college extension service. For winter feeding these feeds Inelude corn silage, sunflower silaie, sugar beet pulp, mangels, carrots and potatoes. The beneficial effects of the addition of any ot these feeds a.re numerous, ss.ys Prot. Caine. Just as the human appetite is stimulated by fruits and green vegetables, so is the bovine which appetite stimulated by succulence, induce11 the cow to eat more teed; consequently, more m.llk is produced. It is reasonable to believe that these palatable feeds stimulate dlgeetion also, and it is known that their laxative action aids greatly in keeping the digestive tract in good condition, Prot. Caine advises. This year potatoes are cheap and many will never find a market. For this reason Prof. Caine recommends the feeding of potatoes to dairy animals. The chemical analysts of potatoes shows that they have a higher percentage of dry matter and total digestible nutrients than any of the other succulent feeds already men~ tioned, but they are slightly lower in protein than sugar beets. When potatoes are fed with alfalfa, the protein factor need not be seriously considered as there is usually plenty in the rations, says Prot. Caine. Pots.toes should be chopped as the round, whole tubers may choke the cows. They may be fed in quantities of trom 2~ to •o pounds a day. See Your Local Dealer 1 * --------------- , !
