Not unbl the fire sounded like the crack of a rifle did the cats move th~n they darted swiftly into th~ thicket. The female wanted to help so she drove a large band of deer back to t1;te hiding place of the male. With hmd claws unsheathed and ivory fangs gleaming, sprang upon a buck and tore out its throat. The pair wondered why hunting was so easy They did not know that they had blundered onto a government feeding ground and that already someone was out for their necks. Nat Marshall was tired and out of sorts. He had hunted the outlaws for nine days and still no sign of them. He had often come across a carcass still warm and knew that the killers were at work. One night, when he was sitting in front of his tent, a large cougar darted like a shadow across the clearing in front of his tent. He killed it and discovered that it was the female ~f the pair he was looking for. Now 1t was a battle between the male and the man. One day the male cat saw a herd of moose coming to the feeding grounds. Had he known their ways he would not have tried to make a killing. But he did not know· in~ stead, like a tawny streak of lightning h~ sprang on the doe and killed it. To h1s surprise the moorse did not run instead they charged toward him with heads lowered. It was a battle of grim-lipped killer against a herd of moose. What chance had the cat ? When the moose had stamped the life out of the killer he tossed what was left scornfully to the side of the road. The crows found the spot and by their noise led Nat Marshall to the spot. Nat took one look and realized that he could go home.
