Show 0 Hilltop Times August 21. 2003 'Waiting game' eliminated through lean process plans Editor's note: This article is part of a series highlighting the improved processes of organizations throughout Hill AFB. The Air Force is encouraging the use of transformation and lean initiatives to help it achieve and maintain advantage through changes in operational concepts, organizations and technologies. OrganizationArea: Commodities Division Landing Gear east wall area n Comm Squadron minimally manned an official unit function, the 75th Communications Squadron will experience minimal manning today from 1 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Help Desk and Message Center will remain open.-Al- l other work centers will be on call, and mail will only be delivered during the morning. D Chapel hosting praise music group The Base Chapel presents SpiritShine, a Christian, joyful noise praise group, Saturday at 7 p.m. Having served in the military, Bill and KatieToney, of the group, have written and led praise and worship music events around the world. A reception will follow in the chapel annex. Every employee is encouraged to share their improvement ideas. A major change in how paperwork is handled has already taken place. The team is making progress without spending additional money and has located some older, usable equipment Comments: "We don't need big, fancy, new equipment," said Greg Bellomo, of Mainstream Management "It's all about optimization, better preventative maintenance, and operator training." "We want to get everyone involved up front so when we make changes the employees recognize their value and accept them," Walker said. The team is excited about the progress they've made, and employees are starting to see the value of the cell concept. Instead of a disassembler or a blaster looking at just their area, employees are looking at the whole picture and have an attitude of "What can I do to improve the entire area so I can work better not more," Walker added. For more information about transformation and lean principles, contact Col. Michael "Maq" Maquet of the Ogden ALC Transformation Office, Ext. ing, inspection, and an evaluation and inspection section. Currently, more than 70,000 parts routinely move through the areas only to play the "waiting game." The division's lean team plans to use transformational processes to reduce area flow days by 80 percent and reduce work in process by 90 percent, travel distance by 90 percent and floor space by 50 percent. Currently, batches of struts going from process to process are often forced to wait until the batch before is completed. "What should teke only four to eight hours now takes an average of about 15 days," said Rulon Walker, lean team engineer. "Parts spend more than 70 percent of the time sitting and waiting." With the help of Mainstream, a consultant company specializing in helping organizations identify and eliminate waste, the team is working through 18 principles used to implement lean.
