Show December 3, 1 998 Advocacy classes help parents raise children by Mary Galbraith gram. The course runs once per week k over a period. "It's probably the most effective program I've ever seen and I've done a lot of programs this program seems to have a lot more tools," said Sondrup. "Especially in areas dealing with kids when they're out of control and how you can handle those situations." Sondrup focuses much of the class on effective praise and encourages six-wee- Hilltop Times Staff Writter Parents who've just had a child, have someone in elementary school or are raising a teen can attend free classes. The Family Advocacy Center at Hill AFB offers several courses to help parents develop a variety of skills. Daryl Sondrup, Family Advocacy Center outreach and prevention manager, teaches many of the classes. Everyone enrolled in a course receives a free manual and has the opportunity to view videos and listen to audiotapes designed specifically for each program. Sondrup said he'd like to see more military and civilian personnel at Hill AFB take advantage of these classes. He said sometimes individuals don't want to come to Family Advocacy because they worry they'll have official documentation but no one who attends these classes has information placed in the medical record. He said one of the best classes he teaches is the Common Sense Parenting program based on the Boys Town Program in Nebraska. Sondrup and other Family Advocacy staff went to Boys Town to learn about the pro parents to give kids four positive remarks for each negative remark. "Unfortunately that's just the opposite in some homes," Sondrup said. "That's really one of the most important chapters." He said effective praise is important from very early ages. The Common Sense Parenting Program also focuses on preventive teaching, which helps a child deal more effectively in difficult situations they may experience like conflict with a teacher, coach or a classmate. Preventive teaching also helps children deal with new and unique situations like the first day of school and their first time away from home. "Preventive teaching helps prevent problems before they happen and if parents can do that, it's really a plus," said Sondrup. When the Wildcats win, Parents listen and learn while Family Advocacy instructor Paula Sever discusses the importance of child Corrective teaching is another area of emphasis in the Common Sense Par- enting Class. "Corrective teaching is dealing with situations where a child does something they shouldn't be doing or doesn't do something they should be doing," said Sondrup. Parents learn how to deal with problem situations without losing control, their temper or using physical violence. 7 WEBERSME m I k I3 WW BANK of UTAH Here's how it works: If the V WSU basketball team Thtirsciay, WSU purchase of 897 West 1700 South Expires 13099 Syracuse k. v jk. - November 19 Brtcjham young Saturday, December 19 Utah Stare (Deltn Cmrrr, SIC) Wildcats Saturday, January 9 Montana c eacnr Wednesday, January 9.1 tastern Washington Saturday, February 6 Sacramento State ESS?Sr!5T?'l,"l!l'l,f.'.f?-"!,,r,'?M'MSaturday, reDruary ii Nortliem Arizona 3 The pouchm are food of UTAH m 1998-9- 9 A V for any home fame during the tttuon.
