Show 7 Hilltop Times Aug. 22, 1996 Command-wid- e r i y 9 : . Day for ACC 1 - LANGLEY AFB, Va. (AFNS) A command-wid- e Safety Day has been directed by Gen. Richard F. Hawley, commander of Air Combat Command, for Friday. In the last 30 days, ACC has had four aircraft crashes. The overall aircraft accident rate for fiscal 1996, however, is about equal to the rate for the same time period last year, according to ACC safety officials. ACC has also had 19 ground mishaps for fiscal '96 with fatalities or serious injuries. "Our goal is to ensure the safety of our people and the preservation of our combat capability through aggressive mishap prevention," said Hawley. During this day all routine training and exercise activities will be canceled to allow every unit to focus on ways to identify, assess and offset risk. Contingency operations and deployments will continue as planned, as will scheduled flight demonstrations, static displays and similar missions whose cancellation would jeopardize the success of activities to which other agencies have made a substantial resource commitment. y "We must step back from the pressures of the mission and spend a day identifying and quantifying the risks associated with everything that we do, then devising practical ways to mitigate those risks," said Hawley. "We will look at every part of our operations, from the way we provide off duty educational opportunities to the way we plan, brief and fly our missions." Air Combat Command is responsible for training and equipping all active, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve combat wings and squadrons in the United States and Panama. The command- comprises more than 980 aircraft and members and civilian person108,000 active-dut- y nel at 32 major installations in the United States, Panama, Iceland and Portugal. day-to-da- " J S Jheymoke your newspaper TAKE-OU- T STATES j J'r f ViTTl fun-fille- d 50-ye- I Mi's Easy .NoCrediiQualifjin; No Verification of Income MSgt.
