Within the next week, the Black Widows of the 421st FS will deploy approximately 18 and 250 troops to help guard the south-e- m y zone of Iraq for the third time since the end of Operation Desert Storm. Operation Southern Watch enforces a U.N sanctioned, no-fl-y zone over Southern Iraq. Although the unit has made the journey before, some people deploying have not "I've never even gone temporary duty before. Although I know it's going to be hot, I'm actually excited because I've never been out of the country," said Amn. Tom White, weapons loader for the 421st FS. th 6s no-fl- While White is excited, others have some concerns. "I'd much rather spend time with my family. I've been TOY before, but never more than six weeks," said TSgt Brian Hill, 421st FS Quality Improvement Office and e desert deployer. "Three months is a really long time, but I have to go where my job is needed." HilL his wife, Michelle, and their children, Jeffrey and Steven, are already planning for his return. "When I get back, we're taking a trip home to Washington to see relatives," said HilL While loved ones are counting the days until the squadron's return, pilots from the 421st FS will be patrolling the skies of Iraq, a repeat performance for some. "I was there with the 4th FS during first-tim- Desert Storm," said Capt Ed Rinke, project officer for the deployment "I haven't been back since. (The 388th Fighter Wing was ready then, just as we are today." Flying in the desert is a new experience for some. "I'm anxious to get there," said 1st Lt Darec Liebel. "Like they say, 'The quicker you go, the quicker you get back.' There's a possibility of conflict, but it's fairly slim. I think it will be a great learning experience. I've never seen that part of the world before. The hardest part will be being away from Sandy." Liebel's wife, 2nd Lt Sandy Liebel, 388th Operations Support Squadron section commander, will be anxiously awaiting her husband's return. The couple has a special trip planned. The 421st FS is expected to return to Hill AFB in June and will rotate with the 34th FS. 4th Fighter Squadron deploys to Chile By SrA J.C. Woodring 17 Editor, Fighter County to The 4th Fighter Squadron deployed 46 troops and six Santiago, Chile, over a span of a couple days last week, to take part in an international airs how and a training mission with the Chilean Air Force. "This isn't an ordinary airshow. This one's big," said Capt Mike Torrealday, assistant project officer for the 4th FS deployment "It's special because there will be people there from Israel and Russia to Peru and Brazil." The last group of Fightin' Fuujins and other American units from the Army, Navy and Air Force arrived Saturday joining units from 23 countries for the largest international airshow in Latin America, Feria Internaticional del Airey del Espacio International Air and Space Fair '96. The United States will have the largest representation in the show with more than 200 military troops participating. "Now's our chance to shpw the world what we've got," said Torrealday. "Every year this airshow grows, and it's a great opportunity to be part of it." This year's week-lon- g event, which began Sunday, will be the largest biennial FDDAE since it began in 1978. 6s . The show has expanded to include Russian MIGs, a U.S. B--2 Globemaster HI.
