Space Day, a gathering of experts to coordinate, plan and upgrade the Air Force space program, is being held today at Hill AFB. Gen. Henry Viccellio Jr., commander of Air Force Materiel Command, is among more than 15 general officers attending the conference at the Officers' Club. Viccellio and Gen. Joseph Ashy, commander-in-chie- f of North American Aerospace Command and U.S. Space Command, and commander of Air Force Space Command at Peterson AFB. Colo., are the event. Activities include briefings until noon, followed by a tour of. the ICBM repair facility. Briefings include: B Mission area plans and their effect on Electronic Security Command and the Space and Missile Center. AFMC's support of the process through technical planning integrated product teams will also be discussed. B Looking for a way to define, acquire and sustain space systems training. Ideas include using an Air Education Training Command mission area plan, with AFMC support, dedicated to space training. B Discussing how AFMC will support ICBM guidance repair with the scheduled closure of Newark AFB. Ohio. B Development of a plan for receiving operator's technical orders, a key aspect of normalizing space operations. B Consideration of the impact of reducing the system program office by 50 percent, due to downsizing and streamlining. B Regional and Sector Operations Control Center modernization, which is part of the Atmospheric Early Warning System, is nearing completion of the first milestone. Discussions with Canada will establish an international agreement and a joint program co-hosti-ng 1 1 office. Ashy Viccellio Yesterday Hill AFB welcomed a group of Defense DeparjLment officials, including 16 generals, for theAir Force's Space and Materiel Command's Space Day. The meeting will be by Gen. Henry Viccellio Jr., commander of the Air Force .Materiel Command, and Gen. Joseph W. Ashy, commander in chief of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the U.S. Space Command, and Air Force Space Command. ' As CINCNORAD, Ashy is responsible for the air sovereignty of the United States and Canada, as well as for providing tactical warning and attack assessment. As USCINCSPACE. he heads the unified command responsible for directing space con high-rankin- g co-host- . co-ho- st Space Day trol and support operations, including theater missile defense. As COMAFSPC, Ashy directs satellite control, warning, space launch and ballistic missile operations throughout the world. Ashy entered the Air Force in 1962 as a distinguished graduate of the Texas A&M University Reserve Officer Training Corps. He has commanded two fighter wings, the U.S. Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center at Nellis AFB, Nev.. and the Air Training Command. Randolph AFB, Texas. He also commanded NATO's Allied Air Forces Southern Europe. Ashy is a command pilot with more than 3.500 flying hours in fighter and attack aircraft, including 289 combat missions in Vietnam. ? Gen.
