Show Sept. 16, 1993 Jews welcome new year, 5754 (Lt. Col.) Dennis E. Aleson by Chaplain AFB Senior Hill Chaplain Yesterday at sundown Jewish people around the world welcomed the Jewish calendar year 5754. Today and tomorrow mark the Jewish observance of Rosh Hashanah. When people gather on the eve of these special days, they will greet one another with a traditional Hebrew greeting that means, "May you be inscribed for a good year." The Jewish New Year observance is unique in that it combines solemnity with joy. Calls for repentance and inner reflection are balanced with new hope for the future. The judgment of God upon all human beings is intended to provide light for the year ahead. One special tradition during these days of Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the ram's horn known as the "Shofar," calling the people to and atonement. The two days of Rosh Hashanah begin a y period that concludes with the Jewish Holy Day par excellence, Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). Yom Kippur observances begin at sundown Sept. self-judgme- nt 10-da- 17 Hilltop Times ROSH HflSHflNflH 24, concluding at sundown Sept. 25. On this holiest of days God's judgment is passed on all persons, with people then seeking forgiveness for the sins they have committed against God and each other. Fasting, as a sign of repentance, is a significant part of Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur activities will be held at both Congregation B'rith Sholem in Og-de- n and Congregation Kol Ami in Salt Lake City. The Ogden congregation extends an invitation to interested members of the Hill AFB community to come as guests, with Rosh Hashanah activities through Friday night and Yom Kippur activities beginning the evening of Sept. 24 and throughout the day Sept. 25. Interested people should contact Hill Jewish lay leader Maj. (Dr.) David Wexler at Ext. 2 or for more information. While Congregation Kol Ami in Salt Lake City also invites interested people in the Hill community, please note that prior registration (complimentary) is required. Please call Ralph Tannenbaum at for further information and the necessary registration. 546-698- 484-150- 1 I -- f v 7 1 IX f I Real A Bargain ft Hunters try the ft 4 nnicn rrnnni mricic ILL hdilMU tLUilLU M SEPT. nmnrnmr kirw nn Te nrn nnnnriPin vanri u Uk Uk LJiCIMilUM UkJ LJLL UMLJ MB 4 rfl VjQ 20 THRU SEPT. 25, 1993 ONE TIME MEMBERSHIP OPPORTUNITY 3 v ft Membership Warehouse, Inc.
