Feb. 6, 1992 Hilltop Times 15 o (gj0lTQ by Lisa Colgate Hilltop Times staff Max strikes again! You may not have seen it, but believe it! Max Shellabarger, 2849th Civil Engineering Squadron's Plant Management Division maintenance supervisor, has just bowled 300 points for his third perfect game of the season at the Hill AFB bowling lanes. So what's the secret to this amateur bowler's success? A lifelong Roy resident, Shellabarger attributes his latest feat to hours of practice and dedication. Bowling an average of 20 hours per week at the Hill bowling center, Shellabarger claims he has come a long way since picking up the sport 10 years ago. "I've always been competitive," Shellabarger said. "I used to play golf and softball, but bowling is much easier on us old men." Don't let his modesty fool you, however, as Shellabarger takes his game seriously. Like any true sportsman, skill is only part of the game. Shellabarger also relies on his equipment for maximum performance. For example, whether it's practice or an actual competition, Shellabarger normally carries six to eight balls. How does anybody carry eight bowling balls and still have the strength to bowl? Very care- fully, according to Shellabarger. "It's bulky, but I have a special method." he said. "I use bowling bags to carry two balls over each shoulder and two balls in each hand." With his routine down to a fine science, Shellabarger admits it's hard to slip through the doors $ 111 v " v - , " . undetected. "People tease me a lot when they see me coming," he said. Shellabarger wears two different shoes, a white shoe on the right foot and a brown shoe on the left foot. For those of us with little or no knowledge of the technical aspect of bowling, Shellabarger sums it up. "It's all a matter of traction," he said. "I need different shoes to prevent too much slide on one foot." Shellabarger puts his best foot forward when competing in bowling tournaments around the country. A member of several bowling leagues, he has competed in Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Idaho and Montana. On a local level, Shellabarger competes in a Tuesday night mixed league with his wife, Betty, and recently participated in the Maple Garden Masters, an Ogden scratch bowling league. Unlike many sports, bowling allows amateurs to win cash and prizes in tournaments. Shellabarger says his time is well worth the effort when he not only wins but has something to show for his victories. Base bowling center pro shop manager, Corbet Austin, is one of Shellabarger's regular bowling partners. "I think the secret to Shellabarger's success is his consistency," Austin said. "He has improved considerably over the past five years and he has natural ability on top of that." Bowling partner Blaine Yoshimura says Shellabarger is dedicated. "I like to say he never misses a spare," Yoshimura said. "He's too busy throwing strikes. 3- Ollescuo Three team up to save a life 16 El Far and near Visitors flock to museum 17 Vole Primaries coming up 19 - |
