Addressing a crowd of about 300 people, General King talked about Carter Goodwin Woodson, the father of black history. Mr. Woodson's parents came out of the bondage of slavery; however, that wasn't a stumbling block for them because they had a great desire for their children to learn, the general said. Being one of nine children, Mr. Woodson had to work to help support the family. He eventually went to college where he learned how to speak French and Spanish fluently. In 1912, Mr, Woodson received a doctorate in history from Harvard. He saw that the historians of the time weren't fair to blacks.' Some pages of history were missing and some pages there were incorrect. So. in 1915 he and four others decided to establish the National Association for the study of Negro Life and History. General King told two other stories about One was about a young man from Kenya he that helped go to college. The other was about his mentor, J.C. Carpenter, who taught him how to reach out and help someone.
