This was all without electrical power to the post except emergency generators. The Navy was also there help- ing even though they were fairly well isolated on Treasure Island with heavy damage of their own. The Navy also offered a ship for emergency housing. All told, the military were very good neighbors to the civil authorities. The recovery from this earthquake will take a long time, but the human spirit will prevail. Very few people talked about moving out of the area. If you're a native and have been through several of these things, you just count the losses and start over again. Some people will have to start from scratch and some from minimal homes and belongings. There are a lot of agencies that have set up relief funds. I strongly encourage people to give to one of those funds There is a great need now and for a long time to come. The elderly especially need help. Many of them had lived in their homes for years and now have to find somewhere else to live, which is very tough in San Fransico on a fixed income. The picture I will always remember is Joe DiMaggio standing in line to find out if his home was still in one piece. It really showed how disaster can affect anyone at any time. John Pier-soHill AFB senior Catholic chaplain, and 60,000 other people at Candlestick Park in San Francisco waiting for the start of the third game of the World Series. We never saw the game that night. At 5:04 p.m., a devastating earthquake hit the Bay Area. What I saw over the next few days made me reflect on several things. Everyone complains about military disaster exercises, but let me tell you, the folks in.San Francisco were more than happy they planned and practiced as much as they did. The officials were very well prepared to deal with this type of emergency and it showed. This is one of those disasters . What they had is what they got. If you weren't ready five minutes ago, n, come-as-you-a- re it's too late now. The military reaction and presence after the whole disaster was outstanding. The Presidio Army post assisted immediately with military police to handle crowds. The fact that they were next to the Marina District made their assistance all that much more critical. They also assisted with hospital care, emergency OProK ' ' Y-- eUtfV " ' - ,1 -A .- ?'
