Show 6 Hilltop Times NEWS May 26, 1989 0 KZTTDDSR LUKE AFB, Ariz. (TACNS)-- Lt Gen. Peter Kempf, 12th Air Force commander, accepted the low altitude navigation and targeting infrared system for night, or LANTIRN, navigational pod for Tactical Air Command May 17. The general accepted the system at a ceremony held at Luke. They will be the first TAC base to fly with LANTIRN. Gen. Michael Loh, Aeonautical Systems Division commander, also was on hand for the ceremony. "On behalf of General Russ, I would like to thank General Loh and Martin Marietta for providing us with a quantum leap in our tactical capability," General Kempf said. "It's a tremendous addition to our tactical air forces." Speaking to the Luke air crews, General Kempf said, "This new system keeps the traditional sanctuary of darkness for you while taking it away from your enemies." "Indeed, this is a true force multiplier for our tactical air forces," General Loh said. "I first got involved with this project at TAC when it started a few years ago. This has been a total team effort from the start. "From the contractors to the suppliers to the users, the work has been truly magnificent," he said. 'sweiSf, LANTIRN is a mmmmmmmmmmmMmmmmmimmmmmmmMm im navigation system that will revolutionize the combat effectiveness of tactical fighter aircraft. It provides n infrared imagery and precision targeting functions for highspeed, flight over any ter' ' rain at night and in the limited-visibilit' conditions of smoke, dust, dry haze and smog. The system will enable pilots of the Eagle and 6 Fighting Falcon to fly and fight with greatly increased effectiveness and survivability. LANTIRN denies the enemy his traditional sanctuary of darkness by allowing our pilots to seek out targets at night almost as easily as during the day. This allows them to fly very low over all types of terrain.
