Gen. Alfred G. Hansen handed out two Commander's Service Awards, four suggestion awards and met with recent recipients of other quality awards during his March 29-3- 0 visit. Karen K. Jones and Emil B. Soderquist received Commander's Service Awards, also known as Civilian Warrior Awards, at a luncheon at the NCO club. Rosanna Butler received a Quarterly Individual Quality Award at the luncheon for a money-savinsuggestion she made. An hour earlier, Stephen M. Curry, Michael J. Burningham and Marius J. Van Adrighem received suggestion awards at a brief ceremony near the quality section of the main maintenance hangar. The general also commended seven people who had recently received quality awards. Ms. Jones, a program analyst in the Directorate of Plans and Programs, received her service award for the excellent way she handled her part in the to Hill. Mr. Curry, a maintenance materiel expediter, was awarded three certificates for three suggestions that, combined, saved the government more than $112,000. The first suggestion concerned what appeared to be an overpriced edge plate used on F-aircraft. The contractor, after being challenged on the item, voluntarily lowered his cost. The second suggestion involved testing and repairing light 4 panels that were previously thrown away. The third suggestion involved testing and repairing external lighting control panels, many of which were saved. Mr. Curry was awarded more than $5,500. Mr. Burningham, a physical science technician was awarded $3,486 for a suggestion that saved the government some $92,864. He developed an process to refinish the exposed mirror surfaces in a camera used by the command. The mirrors periodically had to be sent to the vendor for refinishing before Mr. Burningham developed the process. Mr. Van Adrighem, an industrial engineering technician, was awarded $2,679 for his suggestion, which brake saved the government $65,965. The .valves were being condemned when the ball check valves became embedded in the body. He suggested a repair procedure to bore out the condemned valve and install a bushing.
