Show 34 HILL TOP TIMES OcteUr 9, 1917 is swims that o Some people call them the gold swims. One of our most common panfish, the yellow perch is nonetheless an underused resource in Utah. While Enamour species such as trout and bass get the headlines, a small group of knowing fishermen concentrates on the yellow perch to the near exclusion of all other fish. In other parts of the country, the yellow perch is the first species caught by youngsters, the species , they grow up and old with. An eager biter that swims in large schools, a pugnacious if unspectacular fighter, and a pure delight in the frying pan, he is a species truly deserving to be called a game fish. Here in Utah, yellow perch can be found in a number of reservoirs and lakes. Hyrum Lake near Logan is my favorite perch hotspot year 'round, with ice fishing exceptionally good. Hooked from beneath the ice, a yellow perch will put up a surprisingly good tussle on ultralight tackle, and the cold clean water makes its sweet, white flesh a gourmet , . treat. ; ;: Bait for perch ranges from the old standby of worms to tiny gold or brass spinners. Where legal, strips cut from the belly of another perch is a killer bait, as is a perch eye carefully hung on a tiny gold hook. Check the Utah Fishing Proclamation for the lake you plan to fish to be sure a given bait is legal. For example, live minnows are a standard and potent perch bait, but are illegal in Utah. There is no charge, but seating is limited. rccb Whether through the ice or not, light tackle is a must for perch. The fish can be light biters, and on those days, you can lose a lot of bait without ever being aware of a bite if you use heavy line and large d bobber. test is the heaviest line you'll need and four is better. One or two tiny split shot, just enough to get the bait down, is best, and nothing larger than a size six hook is required. Use the smallest float or cork that will support the weights, hook and bait. This will show even the smallest nudge of a bite. Yellow perch tend to school at a very definite depth and you may have to adjust your bobber until you find the depth where they are feeding today. This is especially true in winter, when just an inch or two either way will get you no action. Kids and perch go together like peanut butter and jelly. Be sure to include that neighborhood youngster you've been meaning to take fishing. Speaking of things to eat.
