Show Seder mm e o 1 & i ro dl i n 5 a ira Most of Hill Jewish community celebrates at home by by Paul I. Dervin Jewish lay leader Passover begins at sundown tonight and lasts through sundown April 9 and most of the Hill AFB Jewish community will celebrate it in their homes. The celebration includes retelling the Passover story, reading the Hag-gada-h and having the traditional Seder meal. Passover commemorates the dramatic struggles of the early Israelites for freedom from slavery and their redemption from Egyptian bondage in the days of the pharaohs. It also reminds each Jew that if God had not freed his forefathers, then "he and his sons and the sons of his sons would still be slaves to the pharaohs of Egypt." The Seder. This thrilling chapter in the story of the Jewish people is recounted and dramatized in the beautiful Seder service of Passover night. This service is meant to bring the family together. Every member of the family has his place at the Seder table. It's not only for the family that Jews are mindful of the Seder. Haggadah. This is the Seder ritu al which extends an invitation to strangers to join in the festive board. As the Jewish people say, "Whosoever is in need, let him come and eat with us; whosoever is hungry, let him partake of our feast." The breaking of the matzoh bread of affliction has been interpreted as a symbol of Jew- ish people's eagerness to share then-foowith others. The teaching. The Passover epic teaches Jews to share their blessings with all their neighbors. They must be generous and charitable toward the weak, the persecuted and the alien, "for we were strangers in the land of Egypt," they say. Passover also makes them aware of their debt to God, from whom all blessings emanate. Jews must also remember that God emancipated them from the land of Egypt. Interestingly, during Seder, as the Jewish people enumerate the 10 plagues, it is accepted practice to drop some wine from the goblet on their plate. This is to remind them that, when other human beings are suffering, their cup of joy cannot be full. The Tor ah.
