Connie Byro, spokesperson for the chapter, the social will last from 6 to 10 p.m. Free food and drinks are provided. "All base enlisted members are welcomed to come on by and talk to our members," said Sergeant Byro. The AFSA provides its members a variety of benefits. "We're always recruiting new members and know no better way to do this than through social events like this one," she said. For more information, call Sergeant Byro at Ext. 71128. Local Area Network is a fact of life at Hill AFB, but its influence is only beginning to be felt. Visualized as far back as 1981, LAN connects more than 60 base buildings with 100 miles of computer cables. According to Ray Moss, deputy director of computer systems, LAN connects 13 mainframe computers at Hill, giving workers access from any single terminal to any of the mainframes. However, while the installation process has dominated LAN, resulting in an impressive communication system, according to Mr. Moss, the operational tasks or making the system useful to employees is but a babe. Early in the decade, foreseeing the need to modernize the logistics management system, Air Force officials embarked on the development of Now hours posted Due to public demand, Hill AFB Museum officials have extended their winter hours of operation to include Saturdays. The new hours are: 9 October-Apri- l: a.m.-2:4- 5 4 9 Mondays through a.m.-- 8 Baker, an astronaut with will be the featured speaker at NASA, the Feb. 12 brunch in the Heritage Room at the Hill Officers' Club. The Federally Employed Women's program will begin at 8 a.m. r Dr. Baker completed a and evaluation training program in June 1985 after being selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in May 1984. She was chosen for assignment as a mission specialist on future space p.m., Fridays; 10 a.m.-2:4- 5 and p.m., Saturdays Sundays. There is no admission charge to visit the museum, but donations are accepted, according to museum officials. The museum is located of the RoySunset exit (No.341) to Inter- state Highway an integrated e information system for users. Air Force Logistics Command officials adopted the LAN idea and devoted $1.5 billion for its construction in five air logistics centers. It just so happens Air Force Logistics Command developers chose Hill to augment the program and maintain the biggest LAN in the free world, according to Mr. Moss. "LAN is a good example of teamwork," Mr. Moss said. "The Hill project came in on schedule and was within budget." Air Force officials completed requirements documents in the spring of 1985. By September of that year, TRW Defense Systems Group of Redondo Beach, Calif., won the installation contract and work began soon thereafter. Responsible for the design, construction, testing and overall system performance, TRW is building the largest broadband LAN in the world, Mr. Moss said. "TRW, with its sub on-lin- contractors, has established a dedicated and responsive team of experts that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to providing a high performance system that is responsive to the user's needs," he said. The installation program is currently at the peak of activity, Mr. Moss said. All of the trunking or electronic paths and the majority of the cable plant distribution systems having been installed and accepted at Ogden and Warner Robins ALCs and the remaining three air logistics centers should be completed within two months. Additional blocks of buildings are in various stages of design and installation and will serve to extend the LAN area of coverage. Completion of this work is scheduled for September 1988. LAN is located in Bldg. 100, but will be moved to the new base logistics support computer center when that building is completed in the west area. Mr. Moss expects work on that structure to be complete by October 1989. Astronaut will be featured speaker at women's brunch Dr. Ellen p.m., Mondays through Fridays; 10 a.m.-p.m., Saturdays.
