Polk and his excellent company, affords every opportunity. To those who look&for anything beyond merriment, it will present a very black prospect. The fnn is mostly created by the ludicrous situations in which the actors are placed by their own or some one else's deception, mischievous and otherwise. In fact the whole comedy might, be called the "School for Lying" with great propriety. Hence its demoralizing tendency. But American audiences, as a rale, care little for the moral of a comedy ; so long as It amuses them, they will be satisfied. TbU, no doubt, is the secret of the popularity of such pieces as "Mixed Pickles," its prototype, "The Strategists' and others, which, like "Peck's Bad Boy," are essentially of a famous character. Mr. Polk, as "Joseph fPickle." was the same Jolly, talented mimic and mirth-makas ever, a veritable prince among comedians. Next in merit, Mr, Melville as "Hiram Brown" convulsed the audience. Miss Polk made a very nice "Cherry Brown" and sang the "Nightingale's Trill" with such effect as to obtain an encore. Carrie Carter.our old Salt Lake friend, appeared as "Lucinda Snigglns," an Old maid, which she played admirably. "Deacon Jordan," a caricature on effecwas most his cloth, Rain-forby Mr. tively presented and Mr. Parker played the Reverent Arthur Pickle, with whom his brother mischievlous, got so badly "mixed," as evenly and modestly as the nature of the part demanded. Mrs. Meek as Mrs. Brown, and Miss Cotter as "Susie' did equally good service as they had opthe piece will be portunity. again presented, doubtless to another fair house.
