Q.Cannon.- The first speaker quoted the proverb: "Troth is mighty and will prevail," and proceeded to show how inevitably true it had proven. In all ages. Columbus the discoverer, Robt. Fulton in applying steam. Professor Morse with the telegraph, and the discoverer of gas, etc., all were actuated by the spirit of truth, and after mnch hardship, prevailed. The same principle was Illustrated in spiritual matters. Jesus Christ and His Apostles, because of the truths they preached, were persecuted and nearly all of them put to death, yet even la dying they prevailed, and no name was so honored throughout the civilized world as that of Jesus Christ. In these days God had from heaven and restored the spoken truth to the earth, and though it was as unpopular and as bitterly opposed as ever, It was as mighty now as it had ever been and would eventually prevail. It was the work of the God of heaven, and those who fought against it were fighting against some one else besides John Taylor, Joseph Smith or Brigham Young. ; They were opposing the Almighty and it was them and Him for It.. The world wondered why the Saints, In view of all they were threatened with, were not excited. This was the reason. They knew God was their Friend and they rested their case entirely with' him. They were ready to die, if need be, for the truth, as the Savior and his Apostles did, for they realized that they had a long time to live after this life, and would be well repaid for all they suffered ;Md endured la" a m . righteous cause. President Cannon said, the testimonies of God's servants uttered In truth and soberness, should .have weight With all who listened to5 them. ' Men were not Justified In rejecting thera unless they could prove thejn false. The condemnation of every generation, wnen uoa naa made known His will to man, was that Ilia prophets and servants had been rejected, and their testimonies despised and repudiated with out investigation, ;This was not fair and never had been. The Christian world preached salvation to all who believed, and damnation to all who disbelieved in their doctrines, yet they themselves rejected the testimonies of the Elders of Israel who delared that God had Revealed his will to man and they ; were chosen witnesses of His work in these the latter days, I j i He had never met: a Christian minis ter who had the hardihood to say that God had spoken to him' or had revealed to ; him that "Mormonism" was the heresy It was claimed to be. - This was a striking contrast to the position of the Saintswho were an array of witnesses to the fact that God had given them a personal testimony . of the truth of "Mormonism.? a testimonv which was promised to all who would believe and obey Its principles. It was this peculiar characteristic In "Mormonism" that gave it its strength. There was a power in it the power of truth that made hell tremble. It was the lever whereby mankind would be raised to the presence of God, who had himself been exalted by obedience to the same great truths which it inculcates. It was a great and mighty work and would be. mightily opposed. God, knowing the great odds to be met and contended with in this are. and having decreed It be a victorious era, had reserved In heaven the choicest of Ills spirits to come forth and bat tle valiantly against the powers of darkness or the supremacy of the earth. Satan"' would not relinquish hi domin ion without a. struggle. Every species of opposition would be brought to bear against this work, and it would come as fast as we could bear it; We would be overwhelmed if lt: was not by the restraining power of kept back God. " But victory would yet perch upon our banners. Cohorts of Invisible powers-wer- e operating In iOur behalf. This work would prevail, because It was truth. - There was" no way to des troy it but to extirpate' the people and that God would not permit." The Saints were, laying .the foundation of a kingdom that would reign undisputed for a thousand years, j , , , , ,T to-d- ay Visit. W. N.
