In reference to the proposed and revolutionary legislation for Utah the Omaha ITeratd a short time ago had an editorial from fe-which we take the following: The destruction of and the right of trial by jury in Utah through executive c jmmie i sions and triaj,l ueh by the regular soldiery, will not destroy polygamy. The experiment, if pushed to this kind of extreme, Will recoil on its inventors. Bayonet are not the proper weap ins with which to destroy tcalev! in a free law. country. This is a lud of down Law is not law that tramples every principle Q' personal right under the heel ot a military despotism. That kind of law is the law e might. and It is the law of despotism Utah contains 150 000 peaceable and industrious people 'who are, in vast majority, as honest in their relieious belief and in their lives as any other ; ople on the face on the earth. Fanatical they must oe, mav ignorant to a great extent they as is deluded theV are. But bad un of estimation in the polygamy i versal Christendom, and much as its existent: 3 fn Utah is to be deplor ed, the proposed remedy tor it may i e worse than the disease if the extreme measures are to be forced ui 3n a Deonle who will be (ound very much in earnest lu defence of whatthev hold to be their rights and privileges when these measures an C01MI88IOS?TO nr. VESTIOATE- - The request of the TjegMathr Aa. eembly, embodied in the memorial telegraphed to Congreaa on Thurs-ila- y night, la very reasonibie and An excitement eemmendabie. without any real occasion baa been created in va.toaa parts of the Union, by religious zealots whorhave been worked upon by a few cunning adventurers in thus locality. Meetings have been beid at which in! flammatory speeches have Leen an astonishing made, exhibiting lack of information on the question, and extreme mess urea have been urged upon Congress Citensibly to put down polygamy but really to give tuis Territory Into the control of a small minority. desirous The national of responding to he popular demand or what appears to be such, for the meetings held and all pertaining to them have been greatly exaggerated by the press have hastened ;to mnaua that exhibit the marks of rash determination ruther than thoughtful statesmanship. Ih the anxiety to show earnestness against the object of sectarian wrath, bills have been framed, or resented concocted by them by rjaMe a number of members, and Jl' that are of any length aim move at this political subjugation of the majority in Utah 'than the suppression of that system of marriage which i made the pretext for this hrrati'Uial and legislation. The Legislative assembly of Utati, then, has taken a very proper step in rt questing Congress to pause before proceeding to disfranchise a large number of American citizens, as&establish in this commonwealth, an organized Territory of the Uaioni a system subversive of j every principle of republican government. It is not the first time that the Govern meut of the United States has acted rashly and unadvisedly in regard to Utah. The army which was sent here in the lime of is a case in point. Inflamed by the false reports, of such men as drummond. Broccbus and Ban 4en bury, troops were hurriedly dispatched to Utah to nut down a rebellion that had no existence whatever, and to punish a people who had done no wrong. Then a commission was sent here who found that the excitement raised against Utah had no reason or foundation. Utah was forgiven for sins she had not committed, and the troops were called home after the fiasco had coat the Government many millions of dollars. A Commission of enquiry beforehand would have swea this money and prevented the folly that committed. commission of enquiry would now develop the facts that Utah is Mor-mon- " law-make- rs, de-vis- a auU-republic- Bu-chann- m well governed, peaceful, prosperous, orderly and with lees sexual vice and general crime than any other part of the country; that our local affairs are conducted with honesty, economy and fairness; that our elec tion and registration laws are siro pie, equal, effective and constituwhich tional; that the has been raised is baseless and un called for; and that t here is no need for Congress to violate any principle of free government and equal rights or the in its treatment of Utah ' j "Mormon" question. The enemies of Utah have always been opped to such enquiry. They waut no commissions of that kind. Investigation is not to then taste. They pro eed by misrepresentation hue-and-c- ry of facts, the Inflaming of the public mind, and the incitement of public men to act as the unthinking mas demand. Such a Commissions la asked for would be a wet blanket an the flames of an pas sion, and a developer of that true features of the Utah situation, an this would prove destructive to the sehein es of the plotters.
