Mr. John Paul, of Salt Lakcity, had quite an adventure, In driving Mr. Jennings' cattle from Salina to Bait Lake City last week. On Frie day he arrlyed at Nephl with ltead of cattle, of pure Devon and Durham I reeds, in the best possible condition for the eye of the butcher and the palato of the ' epicure. As he was putting them In a corral in Nephi, remarks were fifty-thre- made by a couple of men of noted character that they would have some of the herd, before it left that place. Mr. Paul was Informed of the remarks, and advised to guard his cattle all night, which he did until "about four o'clock In the' morning, as well as having the gate locked. At daybreak he returned to the corral, and there discovered that during his short absence the whole herd, except two or three, were driven (away" and were out of sight. Mr. Paul sent his men out north, south, east and west in search but without effoot. He had the two men arrested that had expressed themselves so covetously about theoattle.and tried before a Justice of the peace. They acknowledged saying as stated, but denied the robbry, and there being ufllcient to hold no . evidence were released. Search them, they was again made, but no tracks or clue could be found, although a large corral some raliea west from secluded Nephl, In . n. secure andwhich evidiscovered, positlon, was dently was made and used for keej ing cattle under such circumstances. It la well understood that - Is a gang of thieves In that vicinity, well acquainted with every resouroe and resort to make these raids successful. As one of the herdsmen was looking around, an Individual approached him, and stated that be thought he could find the cattle, and if he would give him $20 he could find twenty or thirty head. Mr. Paul was Informed of the proposition, and visited the party, hut told him that no $20 would be forthcoming, but if the animals were not returned soon he would not be overlooked. Next morning, about three jnllea from Nephi, the whole number save one were fouod, and they appeared to have been driven hard and pretty far, as they were In a lather of sweat. They were then taken to their place of destination, passing through Provo on Thursday morning, and tine specimens of cattle there thy were.7Vofo THE I. TOYS. Z. C. M. GRIND OPEMIG OF Enquirer. Dec. Among on OSSm. Election excitement. VHiVKRTON, Fremont Co., Iowa, Dec. 2, l$7d. r Editor heeret News: Myself and Klder Win. V. Reynolds left Bait Lake City. Nov. 7, on missions to the States. We traveled in company with Bishop Rowberry and the "European missionaries to Fremont, Nebraska, forty-seve- n miles west of Omaha, at which place we commenced our labors. We were two days and a half from our beautiful city to this place, and enjoyed our ride very much. We remained here four days and talked with the people at their firesides, two of whom promised to start for Utah as soon as they had fulfilod their engagements already made. We then came on to Council bluffs, stopped over one day. Prest. Little being In the country we did not see him. We arrived at this place Nov. 15, obtained a school-housand held a public meeting the following Sunday, and -- gave out appointments for week night meetings. This caused the priests to howl and they had not occupied the house for church purposes for a long time, they gave notice at the close of one of our meetings that they would hold meeting there the next Sunday morning. The same gentleman had taken notes at our for mer meetings. We attended and heard him try to prove that the days of prophets and miracles were past and were no longer necessary. and caution the people te beware of false prophets, wno would. If pos sible, deceive the very elect. When he closed we gave out an appointment for the evening. At first we thought we would not notice his remarks at all, but after consideration, we decided that I should reply to him. Kvening came, the house was full, and I spoke to them for upwards of an hour. We had tlie best order I had seen in any of the meetings we had attended. Before closing I gave out an appointment for a week-nigmeeting, not wish ing to give them another chance of getting before us. On our way home a gentleman told us he had heard Mr. Miller discuss with sev eral ministers before, "but," said he, "he has got the greatest whip- tlie ever got in his fiing They next got some apostates to attack us, which they did at the closo of a very orderly meeting, and for polling lies they can beat . Their conduct the Salt Lake was most shameful. Several of the religious societies hereabouts are holding protracted meetings, and in giving notice of a second quarterly meeting the other day, the prin ter made It to read second quality meeting. In the midst of all the opposition we have had to con tend wiin, me j j or a iias been with us, aud his Spirit has rested down upon us, while we have, in our humble way, sought to lay before the people those principles which alone can save and exalt man in the presence of God. There is much excitement here about the late election, and both they are ready to fight riartles saythis line, if it cannot be settled to their satisfaction, and it is thought by some that neither of the candidates will ever take his seat as President of the United States. We have conversed with merchants, ministers, lawyers, and all classes of society, and all agree In saying there is trouble at our very doois. May God bless his ser vants In this laud and give them power to warn the people before troume comes. tpe ' erv reflpedlfullv voura. INST. seated by experienced 11th u.
