It will be noticed that the temp erature, reported by the Signal Ser vice, Is considerably less than that given by other observers. In Cin cinnati, the hii;ual Service ther mometer is higher up than the city, and is protected from refrac tion either from the earth beneath or any thing around it. This gives the actual temperature of the at- mospnere; but it is considerably below the heat which one actually sustains in passing along the street. lhe stone buildings accumulate and give out heat. The pavement and the walls refract it. Hang a thermometer on one of our streets on a summer's da-- , protected by au awning so as to be "in the shade" the heat from the buildings aud that thrown oil from the walls and pavements will raise its mercurv ten or fifteen degrees above that of the Signal feervice. 1 here is another reason why the thermometer fails to indicate the heat felt by the pedestrian. Of course, every one knows that rapid evaporation produces cold. By the rapid evaporation of ether, or like substanees, ice may be made on the shortest of summer days. Well, a breeze striking the pedestrian rapidly evaporates the moisture of hi3 body, and makes him cool. This is the secret of fanning. But a breeze has absolute' no eflect on the thermometer, unless it happens to be a current of actually cooler air. On the other hand, moisture in the air, by preventing evaporation, often increases the heat of the body; the damp hot days are most productive of suflering and sun stroke. The thermometer eivts no indication of this either. Hence we see that different thermometers "in the shade" maj' vary mauj- degrees at the same moment, aud, further, that they may fail by many degrees, either too much or too little, to indicate the actual he it which the human frame has to sustain. Fortunately, Nature has provided the body with off heat in machinery for throwing warm wi.ather and " retaining it in cold. The pores of the hkin are the safety valves. The normal temperature of the body is about 96 deg., and increased perspiration or checked perspiration holds it so through all variations of temperature. If by any means, whether through derangement of other functions, through drafts of wind, or too much heat accompanied with moisture, these safety valves are unable to do their work, and the temperature of the body either rises or falls by a very few degrees, then comes illuesa, shock, aud even death. Cincinnati TiJiics. French Management. In pre- the French paring steaks butcher carefully separates the bones fr.m the meat, and reserves them for other purposes. The housewife orders just enough for each person, and no more, even to the eoifee. If a chance visitor drops in, somebody retites and an extra cup is so provided, but nothing extra by carelessness or inattention-- . When the pot has boiled, the handful of charcoal in the little range is for another extinguished, and waits and time. No rearing cook-stov- e read-ho- t covers all day long for no purpose but waste. The egg laid y costs a little more than the one laid last week. Values are nicely estimated and the smallest surplus is carefully saved. A thousand little economies are practiced, and it is respectable to practice them. Cooklug is an economical as well as a sanitary and gustatory science. A French cook will make a franc go as far as an American housewife will make three, and bow much farther than the American 'Bridget nobody knows we should probably be greatly astonished could tbe computation be made how much.of the nnancial,re-uiprU- e powerof France is owing to her soups and her cheap food; better living, after all. than the heavy hread aud greasy failures of our culinary Ignorance. Now, dou't quarrel, for all may be light. The real heat of the atmosphere is one ClirfM Saint.' Thermoraetrical Freaks. jr, . MAR h? might ledeem us (the Saints') fioni all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar teople, zealous of good work3," is eminently a practical one, by which those who are heirs of salvation obtain the knowledge of God, are of his ways, learn to walk taught in his paths and become his peculiar people, being taught of him through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth. It follows of ucecssit' that the works manifested by the disciples of Christ, the Saints, by which the Father is glorified, must obviously diflcr from those manifested by the world who know not God, because the ways of God are not the ways of mau, neither are his thoughts their thoughts. It is impossible to learn to any advantage but by anything our experience. We demonstrate the coi redness of true principle by practice. 1 1 is our faith in God and Jesus Chiist that leads us to adopt or accept the doctrine of the Father. Understanding they cannot look upon sin with the elight-es- t degree of allowance, leads us to repentance and to walk in newness of life, adopting the principles of the everlasting covenant Then, becoming like little children in our feelings, we submit to baptism, being buried with Christ in baptism in the new birth by one who has the authority from the redeemer to act in hi name with his sanction, after which we receive the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands of his authorized ministers, the apostles, or elders, who are calledprophets, of God the Holy Spirit to this through w ork. Thus the blood of Christ is applied and we are born again, heirs of everlasting life by water, blood and the Spirit, cleansed and sactified from all sin by the blood of the Begotten," we become the children of God to be taught of him the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven aud be prepared to enjoy eternal life in the world to come, even immortal glory.' Thus our faith is manifested by our works and through our obedience we are put in possession of the Spirit of Truth to guide us into all truth and work the works by which God the Father is alone glorified, by which we depart from the vanities and follies of the world, working the works of righteousi ejs, become his peculiar people, vessels of honor, fitted for the master's use, trusting him where we cannot trace him, concentrating our love in him, faithfully carrying out his instructions, proving him in everT respect to be the same yesterday, and forever, au unchangeable God, full of love, mercy, and kiudness, in w hom we may safely trust now ana io:ever.
