Jno. A. McClernand chairman, and resolved to wait on the nominees iu a body, and for that purpose to meet at the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York, on the was 11th of July. A of appointed to draw up a form announcement to each of the nominees and the chairman was appointed a committee of one to confer with them as to when it will be convenient for them to receive the committee. Gov. lleutlt leUtt Spetthft. Several of iNniANAPOLis, SO. the New York delegates called upon Gov. Hendricks at the Occidental Hotel, where the party wa serenaded. Augustus Schell, John Kelly, W. H. Qulncy and others addressed the audience from the balcony of the hotel, pledging their hearty support to the ticket, and exhorting the democracy of Indiana to renewed eflbrt9 for victory at the comiDg election. Afttr these gentlemen had spoken, loud and persistent calls were made for Qov. Hendricks.who appeared on the balcony, and was received with most voctferoua and prolonged cheering. Quiet being restored, he i said: My it is impossible for me to make an address to you this evenI am ing. I believe the next election the people are going to express what is written in the platform adopted at St. Louis and what is wiltten in the history, of', the distinguished man that leads the ticket, and that is thorough reform in the public service. (Great applause.) There ia but one other thought that I will express to you. Some few may have received benefit from its use, but the masses of the people are much better olf, in every way, without it than with it. Wlveu it "is not Bold in our town, civility and order, peace and prosperity abound, good will and kindly fee.liugs exist, but when it is sold, disorder and confusion reign, more or less, with occasional fights, lawsuits, aud ill feelings in our settlement. For more than ten years of my residence in Spring City, no liquor" was sold here, and hence little or no greedy disposition to use it. We were quite as successful iu dealing with the tick, with wounds, bruises and broken bones as we are now, with plenty of whiskey and other liquors, and I am sure much more so. My own experience proves to me that the use of liquor ia a curse in any community, though, through all my life, I have measurably abstained from drinking it. It is the devil's inspiration, productive of much evil, not only in its use, but in its manufacture. Our law empowers our CUy Council to restrain and prohibit the sale of it. Is that law good for any thing or not? Will the editor of the News, or some other wise and learned man in the law, explain this matter in the columns of that worthy and excelent sheet. If I understand the subject, justice, good Reuse and protection to fill classes, especially the many and not particularly the favored few, against disorders, bloodshed and low and grovelling litigation, the guiding star ef all fhould be and any enactments not tending in this direction are calculated to bisd upon the people a burden not only repugnant to them but an unwelcome nuisaace. The citizens of this little town, to the number of about two hunour city council to dred, petitioned prohibit,-b- y the sale or ordinance, dieposr..- - of intoxicating liquors. That honorable body responded to the petitiou by passing an appropriate ordinance prohibiting Us sale in accordance also with the letter Of our charter.
