Mr. David Kvans had a good deal to say laat night, in his speech, about the policy of The CoMMKKt'iAU Ho insisted tbat it is trying to grind down the Mor won people, now that they desire to change to a new course, and become He is not now in American citizens. favor of statehood, he said, but believes in "preparing for it" at this time. Tub Commercial denies as a misrepresentation that it is pursuing the Mormons with a relentless war of It doesn't object to their dion It doesn't even party lines. viding aay that they surely will not abide by their present political professions. Uut it does say that tbey have been wrongfully taught. It does say that men must to some extent be judged by their past conduct. It does say their church policy has been e and treasonable a opprea-pressio- n. church-and-etat- practice. It does that the Mormon nothing else but tbe leadsay people know ership of the priesthood. It does say those leaders have been ambitious and are so today. And it does say that if the Mormons get jptatehood and then desire to run Utihsas a Mormon dominion they can do so. Therefore, it is but prudent, by the rule of all human experience, to insist on their proving their good faith. Mr. Brans insists on the same thing when he Bays he wont trust them with statehood now. Ha proposes to "grind" them just as much as The Commercial does. No, that's not where the difference between Mr. Evans and The Commib-cia- l comes in. Where we split is where he insists that to give the Mormons a chance to be honest Americana it is necessary at once to dissolve the Liberal party. It is the continuance of that party that worries Mr. Evans, not its tyranny. Now the Liberal party was brought into existence to guard Ogden and Utah from the church-and-Btatrule of the Mormons, to oppose the abomination of polygamy, to defend the public schools, to prevent discriminations in politics, trade and labor, by the Mormons. And it would be folly to disband it until it is known to a certainty that those objects have been secured. It ia only com nion prudence for it to stand guard a while longer. And it is all gush and gammon to prate about this prevent ing the Mormons from following national party lines. The Liberals are not opposing that not at all. It don't pre vent them. It can't do so. The whole motive of Mr. Evans and his colleagues is to get the Liberal party out f f the way. They can not be accommodated just yet. e THE WROXG MAN. Yesterday Boss Richards and Boss Cannon came out in their personal organs and had a great deal to say about C. W. Hemenway, now city editor of The Commercial. By reading what both wouki-bbosses say it can be seen that they are running hand in hand and following a program they meet and agree upon. But tHeir game is too transparent. Ilemenway is not the issue in this fight. And ks before noted, those bosses can not dodge the real question by pounding the wrong man. The real question is this: Shall Utah now swing off in the dark as a Mormon state with all the property and personal rights of Weber county liberals at the mercy and completely in the power of d Buch a personification of boss arrogance as C. C. Richards, with a mass of voters behind him who have been taught it was their religious duty - - y his every dictum? t's the question. No use trying it That trick can't be worked. It may here be incidentally remarked i' there was a libelous crime com- e cold-bloode- ttt MES. desire to call the at Th i Com m ebu-tention of the working men A Ogiwa to a few facta. I it not true tLat there was Teryliltle chance f.r Geotiie workicg men in this city until the Liberals got p.jttioa of the city govwoniriit? Is it not a fact that times were very dull and that there was little work to do! Ia it not true that hat jobs there were ware given to Mormon workmen? Is it not a fact that wage were very low and that good prices for labor came in with liberal success? I it not an undeniable truth that the busi-nexgrowth of public works, buildings, chances, came with liberal rule, and that l.beral kuccees meant good fortune to the city and so to all classes of workicg men? I it not true that capital refused to come to Ogden until the . Liberal party rescued it from Mormon rule and created confidence in tbe east? And was not that rescue the foundation of the and 1X)? general prosperity of And will not the east lose that confidence in Ogden w hich Liberal success brought of there is s Liberal defeat? And if capital auits coiniutf and tbe old lethargy returns won't that place working men at the same disadvantage they used to be in? Therefore, is not liberal success in Ogden inseparable with tbe proetterity of the working men? HE CAN DO IT. 3 ast before the last city election tbe "Citizens" party rallied at the Grand opera house. The meeting was almost wholly attended by Mormons and C C. Richards was the principal speaker. He repeatedly and with all the confi dence of one who speaks with certainty declared that he would guarantee per sonally that every Mormon in the city would vote the "Citizens" ticket, and in that way they would put McNutt'e "dagoes" to rout "Dagoes" meant liberals of course. These declarations were re ceived with howls of satisfaction. Well, Richards kept his word. He knew just what he' was talking about He delivered the Moraion vote to s man. And he can do the same thing again in He can do it next year. this campaign. It can be done by Mormon bosses all over the territory. And in that way they can make Utah just what they desire to. And there's the danger. No liberal can talk to the Mormon voters as they can to Americans. The masses of the church will follow the commands of the priesthood to a mas, and if they desire to Bet up Mormon rule they can do it The priesthood has not hesitated to run everything in the past Why will they hesitate in the future? They won't If Utah is admit ted as a state it will be a Mormon church boss state ju6t as sure as the sun shines. Who is there here who thinks that C. C. Richards would be modest about using nis cnurcn reiauons to gam power? Aad it is just such men who run the Mormon church all over Utah. If liberals desire to keep their heads from between the Mormon mill stones they must keep out of the division hop per. That's the only way. ' Quoth Boss Richards' Sun: The Tribune does not publish such rot as Joseph Smith's revelations, or old Mormon bymns as campaign documents. That remains for the assinine editor of The Commercial. Here is a Mormon high priest calling what he and all the Mormon priesthood have for b early half a century been preaching as a di7ine revelation direct from God, "rot." So Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Orson Pratt, George Q. Cannon and IL W. Shurtliff have all these years been stuffing their followers with uow do Mormons mspirea "rot; like that of sort from talk Boss Richards, who, among others, has done so well out of the fat So the positions he has held? priesthood know they have built a church on "rot," and they declare it stands on "rot" today. Joe Smith's revelations, the Mormon hymns, all the revelations and sacred literature of the No Gentile ever went church is "rot." that far in denouncing Mormon doctrines. , It must be that Richards has been authorized by a special dispensa tion to talk that sort of "rot" to fool the Gentiles. He won't fool them any. The Rockport, Illinois News says in the following extract what 99 per cent, of the leading journals of the Nation say. And what the liberals of the United States think is worth considering here. Notice the closing sentence: Politics in Utah are again at fever heat. The election for the territorial legislature occurs August 3, and the contest is being waged with great zeal and bitterness, characteristics always pecul iar to that territory.
