AS 20 GOOD to-- FAITH. Judge ans iuuU that the cootest with the Mormon church is settled. That the government demanded the eupprt too of polygamy, and the church baring abandoned that praotioa all has been done that was demanded. He argue therefore, that no political party can have any cauee against the church aa such, aa there can be no political fight against a church faith. True enough. The practice of polygamy haa been formally relinquished by the church. But haa Judge Zaoe de clined on that account to try and convict persons in hie court, since the manifesto, for practicing polygamy? Ia it not a fact that every court in Utah haa found that the manifesto did not atop the practice? Or. his theory Judge Zane should at once disiuiiM all cases of unlawful cohabitation brought before him am) order the Marshal to make no more arrests. Haa he done so?. Certainly not What does this mean? The bad faith of prominent Mormons who are talking party division? Not necessarily. Their purposes may be all right Certainly many of them are sincere. Hut it does mean that the teaching And most zealous admonition of two generations can not in a day be recalled from the minds of the masses who live away from contact with the modern world and who never have read anything but the literature of the church. And it means that it would be very easy to restore the political rule of the church at any time it the church felt so disposed. And this need not be done by any official proclamation of the church president. Suppose Utah were admitted as a state. Suppose a candidate who had been brought up in the faith were running for the legislature in Box Elder county, where the Mormons have a large majority of the votes. Would it not be the most natural thing in the world, because of the babiU of the past of voting for church candidates ezclu sively as against the Held, for the candidate to use the influence of his church connection to help him, as against a gentile on the opposite ticket? And would not his fellow churchmen be powerfully tempted to discriminate in his favor on that account? And would they not do the same all over the territory where they had a majority? And would not this natural tendency give the Mormon people the legislature, the state offices, the courts, nearly everything? And though not bo avowed, would this not be a solid church government in fact? And being so would not the Mormon people largely discriminate in favor of themselves in nmlnnf nil pc in tm.cn t4 a. . iaj an taws!1 Would not that be a church government, a thing abhorred by all people ' br up or educated as Americans? . not the eame contest have to be made as in the past not perhaps against polygamy, bvt against the solid rule of the people of a single church? And if these are reasoua possibil itiesand they are is it not prudent to be cautious about paingiug into a situation that would be so unfortunate? . a refer especially to the improvement in prospects resulting from recent rains. and particularly in the DakoUs and in portiuos of the South where rain was recently much needed. In other respects the general outlook ia the main unchanged, though there is less Anxiety than of let about gold exports, some purchasers of securities on foreign account appear in the place of recent sales, and large disbursements by the treasury, and br manv oor Deration.
