LADIES . tlJTif woul, tlirtf cvika. iM-i- NOT AeptaJuiii Coftlj to Lay tod Eepair and Brick Considered More Pevirabl. I am com par a stranger in your city, yet if you will kindly give ai space in your valuable paper I will give to tbe citiwna of Ogden my experience on the paving of street and also the probable cost of each differ ct kind. A cedar block are very expensive and all eastern cities have given them up as a failure I will Lave to them. ' I nothing to say in referentbave seen the two sample of asphaltum block left with our street committee. Tbe expert that wa here said the oost of the would be about thirty cent per Now I foot or $2.70 per square yard. I will take the block on Washington and avenue between Twenty-fourtTwenty-fiftstreet for example. I understand that thi street is about 1(0 This feet wide and COO feet in length. would be 7,400 square yards. At a oost of $2.70 per yard it would make the cost $19,980 that the property owners would have to pay. Now, to lay vitrified brick properly they should be put down in double layers. The lower layer should belaid on tbe fiat side with one inch of sand underneath. Then another layer of sand with the top layer of brick, edgewise. Tbe top of these brick should have rounded edges. This keeps them from chipping off and !at the same time gives the horses a better foot hold. Now if these brick can be made here (and J am almost certain they can) thev could be made and delivered on the street at $15 per thousand or l' cents each. It requiresabout 70 brick to lny one square yard. I his would cost $1.0o per yard Add 55 cents for labor and sand would make the cost $1.00 per yard,or $1.10 less than asphaltum, a saving to the property owners on this one block of $8,140, quite a nice little sum, besides patron izing home industry. Now which is the best? Show me i city that will say asphnltum, and I will show you ten that w ill say "no." On the other haad show me city that will sav that vitrified brick isn t good and will show you ten cities that will say it is the best and cheapest material on earth. . . . If the city should put down asphaltum it would probably be done by come outside company, with a guarantee to keep it in repair for a term of years. Grant Ing that ne street shouid last the required number of years there Ib still a a heavy expense every year for the city, as I wijl ventnre the statement that there will be noone month pass within tbe next twenty years that the street will not have to be torn up for city improvements of all kinds. Now who are we going to get to repair these places? But, granting that we have an asphaltum expert here, he would charge at least .V cents per foot to patch it up, and say fhat the city would only tear up 100 feet every month (which is way below reason) this would cost 830 per month while with brick a common laborer could replace the one hundred feet for a nominal sum. If you should go to South Bend, Ind., one of the cleanest kept cities to be found anywhere, you would find the streets paved with vitrified brick. The gutters are paved with common cobble stone out about ten feet on each side of the street. And by the way, this could be done here at the small cost of about 50 cents per yard and would last for all time to come. The city requires the merchants to clean the gutters every Friday morning. The rubbish is hauled away by the city chain gang. 1 simply mention this to show how nice and clean and cheaply the streets could be kept clean. Asphaltum makes, while new, a very pleasant pavement for pleasure riding, but outside of that it is no earthlv good . W. M. Warnep.. Editor Com MtacuL: h h , Notice to the Purchasing: Public.
