The company, assisted by the police, today attempted to run several stage. The strikers first stoned them and then mad a charge, driving away the uolioe. The driver were djagged from their scats and pounded vigorously, while their stage were overturned. Effort of the police aere useless in the face of the overwhelming mob. At one time it was thought the troop would have to be oalled upon, but it is expected they will Dot be ordered out unless the situation become very serious. The police wer later reiurorceu aud made several ar- rests. Public sympathy is with the strikers, who are out for shorter hours and the reinstatement of some of their companions who were discharged because they belonged to the union. Many newspapers of the eity have opened subscrip tion on behalf of th strikers and their families, in order to suable them to sue ceasful push tbeir fight Paris, May 20. It is announced this evening that the government has decided to intervene in the stage drivers' strike. It is evident that the government' determination to interfere is e solely for the purpose of assuring for the public, who, naturally, suffer considerably from the total suspension of stage service. Paris, May 20. The Omnibus strike has ended in victory for the strikers. Corruption of 'ev Orleans. New Orleans, May 20. When the caso of Deputy Sheriff White, charged with bribery in connection with the case, was called today, Leon liurthe, the priucipal witness for the state, was found to bo missing. Inquiry elicited the fact that he had gone to St. Louis, nfter a summons was served on him. The shipping n way of the principal witness in the first of the bribery cases called is regarded as strong circumstantial evidence against the accused. New Orleans, May 20. The grand jury has found an indictment against McCrystal and Cooney, two of O'Malley's assistants, for attempting to .bribe a Hen-ness- juror. It is not in a pleasant frame of mind, for, after investigating the bribery for over a week, it has made the discovery that there is no law to punish the offenders. The bribery act covering the matter has no penal clause. The Reservation to be Opened. Spokane Falls, Wash., May 20. The commissioners appointed to negotiate with the various tribes of Indians now occupying the Colville reservation north of this city, returned today. Their efforts resulted in an agreement with the Indians by which one million and a half acres of the reservation (or a little more ) than are to be sold to the government for f 1 per acre and thrown open to settlement. The land ceded constitutes one of the richest and most attractive portions of the state. one-half- Will Join the Knights. May 20.
