In the light of the suggestions I have made, it is a pleaaant thing to learn the significant fact, that the membership of the German Young Men's Association is quite largely made up of those who have no title to German parentage or origin. I cannot 'resist the temptation to here the thought, that no such association can exist, and escape a responsibility to our people and our Wherever our countrygovernment. men are gathered together with the iirofeesed purpose of mutual improve ment or in furtherance of any useful object, they ought to do something for their country. We cannot afford in the heedless race for wealth, nor in the absorbing struggle for the promotion of saltish ends, to neglect for a day, our duty to our government. So, aa the members of the German Young Men's Association contemplate the steadfast love of country which be longs to the German character let them tins lesson mat nforoe the sentiment is absolutely essential to t he strength and vigor of American in stitutions. If they tintl that German industry and frugality lead to national happiness and comfort let them insist that these characteristics be rooted in our sil; and if they find that the justice and equality which our free institutions promise and which the Germans love are withheld from them and the American people, let them demand from the government which they support a scru pulous redemption or its pledges. As this association crosses the tnresn- hold which lies midway in the first century of its existence, its members may well recall with pride and congratulation what it has thus far done for the promo tion of a knowledge of German literature and the cultivation of German character; and as they enter upon the second half centurv of organized effort, they should be more than ever determined to pursue these purposes, not only because they may thus keep alive a fond remembrance of the Fatherland, but because they may thus, in a higher, better spirit, aid m the cultivation of those sentiments which purify and strengthen a genuine and patriotic Americanism." mo It ki s Tb- - til tt ho Aim at aturritaa-lu- i Makr ay liupuitant luifrt--dut Ju ur M.iLc up. At this moment I recall with perfect vividness another evening nearly eight year ago, when in a beautiful building standing ou this spot and then just completed, inaugurated with songs and rejoicing a grand national hangerfeet That was a proud day for lluffalo, and a prouder one at ill for our Ueruiun who then welcomed aa their guest a large and notable assemblage from many states, representing their national tox'o of music, and at the same time, were peraiitted to exhibit to their aa a monument of the enterof the German Young Meu's Association, the grand and imposing Music Hall in which their festival of Bong was held. The disaster w hich soon after overtook the Association, involving the destruction of their splendid building, brought no discouragement to the membera of the organ iastion. Tonight we meet in another and more magnificent music hall, built ou the ashes of the first, to celebrate the cloee of fifty years in the life of an association that exhibits to every observer the courage and determination which waa mtnilably destined to lead to usefulness and success. 1 understand that among the prominent purposes of theUorman Young Men's Association are the propagation and promotion of a knowledge of German literature, and the cultivation and encouragement of the best elements of German visitors, prise and activity character. So far as tbe first of these objects is concerned, I hope I may lie permitted to Bay, that w hile the efforts of the association in the direction mentioned are most praiseworthy and patriotic, such an undertaking can by no means be moThe value nopolized by an association. and importance of German literature is too keenly appreciated to ba neglected in anv nart of the world where there are those who seek te know the past triumphs of science, poetry, music and art, or where there ars those who strive to keep pace w ith their present development and progress. It is not too much to say that all Jnntious which make claim to high civilization encourage the studv of ( lermun literature, and that the extent to which this study is pursued by a people furnishes a standard of their . enlightenment. On behalf of the American people, I am inclined also to claim tonight that the German character which the association undertakes to cultivate, is so interwoven with all the growth and progress of our country that we have a right to include it among the factors which make Americanism. up a sturdy and thriftycame the GerWith our early settlers mans. Those who thus came to us brought with them a love of liberty which readily assimilated them to our institutions and their natural love of order made them good citizens.
