A aeries of bold forgeries of the most dangerous character were recently executed in Ogden, though the facta have only just come fully to light. A young man who gave the name of Walter P. Martin has been in Ogden and the vicinity for three or fopr months aa ia quite well known to a number of people who have met him here during that time. Martin borrowed from David Philps, an old farmer who owns 100 acres of land near Hooper, his patent for the purpose of having it recorded. Martin then forged a deed from David Philp and wife to hiwseir, and with this complete chain of title, went to Caleb L. McKee, the loan broker at 124 Twenty-Bftstreet, for the purpose of obtaining a loan on the property. Mr. McKee spent a whole day in visiting and examining the property which ia occupied by a tenant As the security waa ample and the title perfect as vested in Martin, Mr. McKee made him a loan of 400,00. A tew days after, David Philp's son came to Ogdeti to get the patent, saw the deed to Martin and told Mr. McKee that it waa a forgery. Hearing that Martin was in Salt Lake City, Mr. McKee disguised himself and accompanied by Marshal Metcalf, started to fand bim. Martin had already left however, for Dallrs, Texas. A warrant was issued for his arrest, the Dallas police were notified to hold him and a reward was offered for his arrest. He hasJbeen in New Orleans, Chattanooga and Memphis. Last week he sett a New York draft to the Frst National bank of this city, instructing them to pay off the principal and interest accrued on the 400 loan Martin made him by Mr. McKee. forged the signatures of David Philp and his wife, two witnesses and the notary public, in making the deed from Philp to himself. He also forged the notary's and witnesses' signatures in making the trust deed which secured the mortgage. A h i ! t"rfrd From appearance ha had deliberately alaia himself itb a knife. Thia aeema strange aa he waa seen on Wednesday in the city and teemed cheerful aa uual and no evidence of hia mind being deranged bad been observed. It ia reported that ho waa oppressed by financial trouble and by aome family matter that preyed upon boa mind. Hia friends were generally surprised at tha newa. Coroner Allen was notified and went out immediately to h4d an inquest. Since tha foregoing waa written it waa learned that on Wednesday flutchins made a mortgage for a f UxO in favor of the State bank. It included also a NoO claim in favor of parties north of the river. The papers were drawn up by K. J. Hendershot, and were signed by Hutchina. who said hia wife waa too sick to come down and add her signature. He told F. J. lleudershot that he waa discouraged, or intimated aa much. He said he'd gone into the saloon business and they'd got away with bis money, and he had no hope of saving any of bis property. Evidently dreading to become poor and bring bis family to want he, possibly in a moment of impaired reason, committed the fatal deed. ' 5 AUCTION Trader, Lfrtartr and Ciuli-zt- r ftroyei Himrlf. 1M. Quite Smooth About It. F. W. Clark, who in default of bail was being held by the county authorities for his appearance, escaped from Deputy Sheriff Belnap yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock. During the day it appears that he had requested the deputy to take him to the barbers to get shaved, which had been dane for him on former occasions. Jos. Belnap was too obliging to refuse the reto quest and escorted the prisoner Reinbould & Schwartz's shop on Twenty-fourth street. On the previous visit there he had made a careful study of the premises and laid out a plan of escape, as was proved . by the manner in which himself with he had familiarized doors and the run - of the the rear entrance to the street. While Belnap was being shaved he pretended to go into a back room but instead took through the side door which opens upon an alley leading to the street and was gone some time before his flight was noticed. Aa tha deputy had Clark's hat and coat before him he never suspected that his slick prisoner would run away bare headed and in his shirt sleeves. A number of men have been ntsrted in pursuit but up to this writing no trace of the man has been found. The Volkt Eetord. John Miller, charged wiah keeping a gambling house, waa fined fi'J including coats. John Keny, charged with petty larceny, waa lined Hi and given thirty days. Judje Bishop's Conrt. And an Ably Conducted and Prosperous Business. Ogden has many excellent business men and a large number of very tine atorea. One of the most popular firms and tuoet attractive of ita business concerns is the hardware bouse of Miles, Strevell Sc Ulnier, located in the Boyle block. This house has three points in ita favor that together have won it much popularity and a very tine trade, although it has been here but a few months. Those pointa are that it is conducted by most affable, worthy gentlemen, w ho exercise that courtesy to customers that ia part of every business success. Another point of excellence, and a very important ODe too, is that they know their business. They have had large experience and this joined with quick intelligence, energy and enterprise, and good commercial principles, enables them to take advantage of many opportunities, especially in buying, that can only be learned by laboriously climbing up through a long course of experience. A third important advantage ia one growing out of the last point mentioned, they keep a thoroughly good store. It is not only bright, well ordered and aU tractive, but the stock is large and includes a tine list of the very latest and most improved goods, for which they have the agency for this territory. For instance: This bouse has the agency for the very popular ''Good Luck ' stoves, axes, saws, lawn mowers, shovels, spades and so on. There are, probably, no better and more modern goods than the "Good Luck" brand. It also handles the long famous Gar land stoves and ranges, which are a match for anything made. It also represents the Superior stoves and ranges, a very excellent brand. Another important specialty this house carries is the Mason fc Davis steel range. Probably no line of goods found in this excellent establishment, is destined to attract more attention than the "Howe Ventilator and Heater." From all accounts this is the most remarkable warming apparatus of the day. It is said that a heater can be placed in one end of a house, in a hall, or almost anywhere so that it can get up an atmospheric communication with other rooms, and it will draw the cold air out of the entire house ana drive warm air in until all rooms are not only comfortable but pure and wholesome. This seems to be about the most economical and complete heating apparatus yet gotten out. The firm carries a general stock of all the grades of hardware, tinware, and cutlery, especially builders' hardware. It has a complete tin shop in connection and can tit up special devices in tin and Bheet iron work, to order. Up to the present time this house has been occupied with filling out all lines of its stock, and putting its Ogden store in order. Its basement room is packed full of nails, shovels, and other goods, a large invoice of the 'Quickmeal" gasoline stoves being noticeable. This is one of the latest and best things out in its line. The first floor is walled up with goods from floor to ceiling, and very handsomely displayed. The top floor is also used for storage. connection being had by elevator. iiut the hrm has now put its house in order and ' will soon begin a regular jobbing business. It has not solicited any orders but has received a large num ber without asking for them. It will be able to make prices that will more than meet competition andgive satisfaction to merchants. There have been three branch stores. one conducted by Mr. G. M. Miles, at Miles City, Montana; a second at buffalo Wyoming, managed by Mr. G. H. Ulmer; and the third in Ogden, now operatad All these by Mr. C. N. Strevell. branches will presently consolidate at Ogden, in one strong, energetic, and ex tensive jobbing and retail house. Northern last evening, having buaineaa at Oneida. Miaa Winnemuoca is alreiwiy well known throughout the country w. J ia probably the brvgbtMt and bkm intelligent personage in feminine Indian circle. She haa several time been delegated by her own and other tribe to go to Washington to attend the conference between the red men and the great Father of the palef aoea. Her self sacrificing labor in endeavoring to train up the coming generation of the Piuu to lives of uaefulneas and conformity to their changed situation has attracted pretty general attention in all parts of the east. When seen bv the reporter yesterday she conversed pleasantly upon various topics. When mention was made to the recent Indian troubles ehe seemed pained by tbe remembrance which the allusion brough to her, but when the reporter changed the subject to tbe future prospects of the Indian she instantly brightened. She ia quite hopeful for the the younger Indiana, and her whole heart is in the noble work of properly rearing and educating them for useful and successful lives in the great, busy, rushing world of the white man. General Agent Firth of the Rx-Island at Denver and P. J. Flvnn, the traveling agent, are visiting Salt Lake City and expect to be in Ogden in a few days. The Santa Fe and Ft Worth roads are already beginning to corral all their stock cars and are sending them to New Mexico, Arizona and tte Indian territory to remove tbe great herds of cattle to the north. The first shipments will be made next week. It is by do means settled that Frank Adams, local freight agent of tbe Burlington, will go to Salt Lake City to become a general agent there. Mr. Adams thinks he is pretty comfortably fixed in Denver. t The Central Pacific fast mail from the west was over two hours late yesterday morning and this laid out the Union Pacific and Rio Grande Western connections. Superintendent Bancroft ia expected to be at bis office today. W. F. Block has resigned bis position of general manager of the Louisville, New Albany & Chicago and W. It. ia appointed to be hia successor. The office of tbe traffic manager which haa been held for a number of years by Mr. McDoel is to be consolidated with that of general manager. Aa waa predicted, W. H. Holcomb, assistant general manager of tbe Union Pacific, has sent in his resignation, and Ed Dickinson, who, as an under employe to Holcombe, was ousted from bis former position with tbe Union Pacific, less than a year ago, now comes back to replace the haugbty Holcombe, for whom very little sympathy is expressed in railroad circles Mc-Do- THAT IS RIGHT.
