Brown oc of O21W1 tu ( t energetic citizeDi and one bo ha docemuch towards the advancement and upbuilding of the city, left for the east upon an extended business trip in the interest of hU newly formed iron company. There is something almost pathetic in the efforts of thia estimable man whose whitened locks will be miesed f"om this community, to put in successful operation the particular industry with which he has so long been closely allied. Mr. Brown many year ago formed the first iron works in Ogden and the full story of their suppression by a jealous rival company from Colorado would read like romance. It was nine yean ago that the works were started and ran just long enough to emphatically demonstrate that they could have been a decided edccees and then they were phut down and closed. Old residents of Ugden well remember bow the Colorado company quietly bought up the controlling stock of this early industry and then suppressed its operation in the faces of the men whose all had been staked in the venture and who saw their hopes flatten out without the right to raise a hand in protest The very machinery was carried off, to prevent the possibility of work being resumed. But the hostility of a railroad hud been a patent factor in the first failure, and this trouble has been removed by the arrival of MORK at Ogden, which city at the mercy RAILROADS no longer leaves the of any one line, and Mr. Brown never lost heart once despaired of some day old works again running in lie was an oid iron man even ing been in the iron business and never seeing the full b'smt. then, hav- in Milwau- kee for many years before coming to Utah, and he'made careful tests during the eight clays that the Ogden Iron Works were operated and he knew that he had made no mistake. Situated near the Great Salt Lake at the foot of the Wasatch range of mountains, eurrounded by the most fertile farming region in the world, and with the most healthfill and invigorating climate, Ogden possessing EVERY ?i ATl'RAL ADVANTAGE, having at its very threshhold more natural resources than any other city or place in the United States and not the least deserving of mention boiiig its im- mense deposits of iron. These are in such quantities and of such easy access thnt the raw ore could be delivered in this city for "00 a ton, being from 55 to Ho per cent, pure iron, and superior in quality to any other in of The varieties world. the the ores makes it poasible to regulate the quality of the iron either a to brittle or flexible grade. It is a quality of iron which for toughness has never been surpassed in this or any other country. BEST It was IKON IN THE WORLD. so pronounced by leading Pitts- burg iron men. Samples of the pigs are at Mr. Brown's iron . still to be seen foundry, and testimonials of its tenacity reach here to this day. One instance is that of the Utah Central railroad, which had bought some carloads of the iron. It was used in the building of a locomotive which, so the master mechanic of that road stated a 6hort time ago, has proven the most durable engine the company ever had. It has passed through a number of wrecks and has always come through all right when other engines were demolished. An eastern stranger in the city last fall desired to take a epeciraan of this iron away with him and attempted to break off a piece with a sledge hammer, and it was only WITH THE AID OF A CHISEL at-ur- OUDEN's WATER POWER, the force of a stream pouring into the eity out of the Wasatch mountains with a fall of DUO feet in six miles which would run mills and factories that would support a population of 1.OU0.0O0. Then tbe agricultural wealth of this country is marvelous. Failure tf crops is some thing unknown and the soil is the most fertile in the United States. This is surely a garden spot mid the plains of the great went, a land of fruit and honey, where flowers bloom and Nature smiles, while the towering moun tains whose summits are covered with perpetual snows, lend enchantment to the scenery. The climate cannot be sur passed, nor the grandeur of its scenery. The BEAUTIES Or OUDF.N, with its Hot Springs and its picturesque mountain peaks; with the pure mountain water which first leaps over crags and through hidden gorges, pouring an everlasting supply into mains and conduits; and with its opportuni ties for recreation as well as business, which combine more of interest than can be found anywhere else. Mr. Brown appreciated these circumstances, and he knew thnt Ogden with its coal and iron in close proximity, with its other resources still lying dormant and at the distributing point of all this wonderful country which has only begun to be developed, must be the point from which this country as well as the rest of the west should receive the iron for all its wants. And so he patiently struggled and for ten long years to form a new iron organization. Whatever time he couli spare from his iron foundry and mac'iine shops on street was at the disposal of Twenty-firs- t anybody who wanted information or facts on his favorite theme. Gradually he has gathered about him men of enterprise and brains, who at last have said the Ogden SELL tiOME VALl itSLK O Ut. Another thing, which of course mains to be tried, is that the gas which has been found in greeter abundance at brigham City could be piped into Ogden in cut the well now being bored does not prove suoceeKfuL Expert have said this gas will fuse iron. As to the probability of a large vein of it being found, indications are pronounced unmistakable by those who are judges and added to this is the connecting circumstance that petroleum is on both sides of Ogden, being found south of here as well as north in qualities. The men w ho formed the Ugden A Gas Oil company aud are reach ing down after this subterranean wealth, believe that tbe chances Tor the success of their project are nine out of ten. But Mr. Brown need not ask the people in the east to consider these prospective things; he has only to give them facts and figures. lie can show that Ogden is a railroad center, and all the roads between the east and west, within a radius of hundreds of miles to the south or north must from necessity come here. IRON WORKS MUST BE, and now no obstacle will be allowed to come between them and their plans. They have formed a local organization Bnd secured the old works and property of the former concern, which the Colorado company at last consented to sell to them. They have bought this plant and with it have a large number of valuable mines and are now about to offer these to Eastern parties who must on their side put up money for the working capital. Mr. Brown is active and full of energy. He is courteous in his manner and has won the esteem of strangers by his patient yet persevering efforts. The different railroads now coming to Ogden will all take this iron in pieferenoe to any other, not alone because of its quality, but because it means a saving of over 120 per ton in cost. Mr. Brown proposes to demonstrate these facts to eastern capitalists and iron men. He does not go to offer them theories, but simply figures - figures tried and proven. There are, it is true, many prospective advantages which might well be considered, but the facts which already are Dr. L. E. Saunders actual and real will suffice to shortly plant in this city an iron industry which has moved his office and residenoe to is destined to become the largest in the Grand opera house building, rooms 14, 15 and 10. west d OGDEN, UTAH, Rocky Mountain Amber, made by the Schellhas brewing company is the best beverage in the market, FBANK MONEOE A Get your breakfast at the German restauraut.
