Her father even showed her the bush, behind the barn, where the child had been discovered. Alii remembered that last rnil blnelrird had hatched out a family in the orchard. She had taken cue of the young birds, while it was still in a state of nudity, and brought it into the bouse, but Mrs. Denning had made her take it lock to the nest and restore it to its jiarenta. (She had committed that lesson faithfully to heart On a recent morning the baby disap-wareLuckily babies of that age are noon misled, and as he was not in the house Mrs. Denning, in great alarm, went oaf to find Alice, thinking that the little gir; had taken him. Alice was cautiously peeping around the comer of the barn, intently watching the currant bnch that her father had pointed out to her, and under its boughs, where the fairies had formerly deposited him, the baby, well wrapped up in a blanket, was lying asleep on the snow. Alice admitted that she had placed him there, hoping that his first guardians would take him back, as the bluebird bad received its returned nestling, last year. New York Sun. Tir-w- diaap-jirovac j Meiaaouler'a I'ontliumou Work. It is not known yet what will be doim with all the unfinished pictures left in Meisannier's studios. They represent a fortune, for many of them, whicu were condemned by the fastidious taste of the painter himself, will soon be in the hands of the dealers and heralded as miitbt-pieceMost of the sketches and mere studies, one need not doubt, will turn out full fledged paintings by the time they reach the amateur. Due can but remember what hapjiened after 's death and after Millet's death. Each had a son who painbsd, and much of the work of those sons is dearly cherished today in hundreds of cabinets in America and elsewhere as that of the illustrious fathers. The posthumous paintings of Meissonier will probably be nnmerous, but it is only right to add that the high character of Mr. Charles Meissonier may be considered a guarantee, so far as his personal influence can go, for the integrity of the artistic remains of his distinguished father. Art Amateur. s. Dau-bigny- Lookout Mountain Shaken. Recently a blast was fired on the side of Lookout mountain, which was remarkable in its size and results. One hundred kegs of powder were packed in six holes and fired by electricity. A ledge of rocks was dislodged, and hundreds of tons rolled down the mountain side, some of the pieces being as high as a two story building. The broad guage railroad trr.ck was destroyed for 200 yards and trees cut down like straw. It took t'vo weeks for fifty men to repair the damage to the railroad, which was worse than a hole in the grouLd. At least 100, 000 tons of rock were thrown out and down. Memphis e. iut II ed Cold Winters and th Salmon Catch. A Waldo county fisherman says that this old fashioned winter will result in a large catch of salmon. Why? Well, he says that when we have an open winter the salmon are near shore, and go up the rivers before the season opens, making poor fihirg for them along the coast. In a cold winter the salmon go into deep water and are longer getting back. That gives the coast fishermen a chance to catch tbe beauties before they get up river. Lewiston Journal. The circle was of great size, the diameter being measured from the suns center northward to the place of the north star. The center of the circle was a little to the north of the zenith. This is one of the roost remarkable phenomena ever in this latitude. In the higher latitudes such circles or halos are not rare. Rochester (X. Y.)
