I.ak WASH. rCiti- Norlieru Pacific H. V pM If yon do not know where "Bellingham. Wash.." is your maps will not help you ont in the matter. Yon will see by looking at a map of Washington, in the upper left hand corner of the state, and just east of Vancouver Island, a little bay act back in Whatcom county. That ia Delliughain bay. On the eastern shore of this bay, and joining each other, are three embryo cities. Whatcom being the oldeist, Sohoine fT New Whatcom the second oldest, and Fairhaveu the youngest A recent effort to consolidate the two Whatcom failed to carry. An effort is now Wing made to consolidate the three cities, but judging from the hot rivalry between these places each is trying to alsorb the others it will lie some time before the thing is accomplished unless Uncle Sum takes a tumble to the fact that under the present system he is being worked on the postoffice quesHe is now maintaining three tion. offices, with contingent expenses, where one would (ill the bill and do it far better at no increased expense. With the three places combined tho population would secure free delivery of mails', whereas by the present system some people of each village have to walk a mile to get their mail, and run great risk it meeting bears, which may lie lnrkin.-- j yet in tho dense primeval forests adjacent to the streets and avenues. For be it remembered that Fairhaven is not jet a year old, notwithstanding a population of some four thousand souls. It is u town such as may be found nowhere else. It haa four banks. two newspapers, one uany ana o1 weekly; at least a dozen ho' els, sah and faro banks too nunv Hon. Hundreds of men ging and dynamiting ouTTiuui grading and planking bn through the forests, and ts aiid masons nnd paiuteis as thick asVeasf in California are putting up business blif ks Real estate and handsome residences. agents are coining money selling lots, while printers are kept busy day and night getting out maps and charts of the dozens of "additions," which even now take in the hills and valleys for miles aronnd. Two or more saw mills are running full force to supply the lumber, and (locks cannot be built fast enough to receive the freight arriving. This is a brief picture of Fairhaveu. Practically the same conditions exist at each of the other corporations named. The great difficulty in the way of consolidation is the u.atter of the uame to be given the new city. To lie impartial 1 have called the consolidated city "Bellingham," the uame of the lieautiful bay upon which these three hustling towns are situated. If this name is not satisfactory I suggest a combination of the three names, taking the first syllable cf the first two and the last of the other. Then we have If that is not sufficiently poetic let them call it "Mt. Baker," or "Baker City," iu honor of Mt. Baker, whose snow capped crown rises into the heavens in full view of each town, making a glorious background to a most lovely landscape. What is tho inspiration of all the activity here visible? Unlimited lnmber resources, contiguous coal mines, whose veins are no less than thirty feet thick; mountains ot solid iron ore of the richest quality, lime stone, sand banks, building stone, agricultural lands, unlimited fishing waters; the finest lakes, over 2iXl feet above the city, forming a natural reservoir, of pure water within two miles of the bay; deep channels and secure harbors, railroad contiwtion with two or more of the gre;;t transcontinental lines, a'climate unsurpassed for both winter and summer, absolute freedom from stagnant water or marsh lauds everything conspires to make this an ideal spot for a great city. There are now three daily, two week ly and one papers in the three towns, und ten banks. Among the hotels are at least six good ones, and two of them are fine modern structures. Houses cannot be built fast enough for the people. Many canvas tents and slab shanties are doing temporary duty as homes for families. Men are pouring in from all directions, and with a pres ent joint population of near 12.0iK) in the three cities five years will see a population of 100,000 at the present rate of in 2 vl'.Wrt.lil.. crease. Men who left New York six months igo are considered old settlers, and substantial business houses aud manufactories stand where six months ago were jungles so dense that a man could scarcely pick his way through the brush. To clear the land of timber costs Jf"i to $100 an acre, and to free it of stumps costs as much more. An electric street car line is being graded connecting the three towns, and heavy cedar and fir logs are being piled into heaps and burned up to clear the way for the car tracks through W. G.
