Mr. Elizabeth Sanders, the keeper and e postmistress who was attacked by masked ruffians at the door of her house at Toledo, two miles from thia place on Saturday and shot in the abdomen, is dead. She punned away without apparent pain at 7:.T0 thia evening. There were present District Attorney W. S. Parker, "Squire D. M. Donohue and others, who bad .obtained a statement concerning the identitr of the assailants. Mr. Parker refused to make public the aiibstance of this statement, but said that the commonwealth had sufficient evidence to justify the conclusion that the three persona now under arrest here were the ieretrator8 of the dastardly crime. A post mortem examination will be held over the remains of Mrs. Sanders tomorrow morning. Shortly after midnight, Constable James Shamiuond in Washington from Cannonsburg, with Ed. l)err, the third smuosd party to the crime. He is only 1G years of c." Shortly after that, they worked their way up to a hay stack and stood under it until dark. The Teaters and Ed. Durr went to the house, Bush refusing to go. Teaters knocked at the door of Mrs. Sanders' house and when she opened it pushed the revolver into her face demanding her money or her life. The lady held in her hand a lamp, and being somewhat frightened her hand trembled, knocking the chimney against the revolver and breaking it The flame w ent out leaving the party in total darkness. Teaters tried to strike a match, but was unsuccessful. By this time Mrs. Sanders had procured her revolver and opened fire on on the ruffians. The lad who made the confession hastily left and went to the haystack, and after the five shots had been tired, one of which ultimately killed the woman, Teaters joined him. Altogether, it is a clear case of too much dime novel of the Jesse James sort. V The Eastern Floods. Pittsburg, Oct. 14. Ass Arbor, Mich., Oct 14- .- Froin time immemorial it has been the custom of college seniors in the law department of the University of Michigan to tend that they alone among the students were entitled to wear the shiny plug hat of fashiou. In times past the juniors have sought to establish a precedent of their right to wear the hats. Iheseat tempts have always been unsuccessful, as the hats have been smashed, and sometimes the owners as well. Secretary DuiKHit promulgated an edict at the oiiening this summer that there would be no rushes or outbreaks such as char acterized the school last year. Yesterday J. S. Dudley, a law junior, and a fel low classmate, thinking, no doubt, that the secretary's order would be obeved, apiieared in shining plug hats. The seniors became indignant and ordered their hats removed. Dudley's companion was set upon bv the seniors and his hat crushed iu and torn. In less than an hour Dudley, who is a Bostonian Jind a disciple of John L, Sullivan, sypea.cd in ids plug hatrmed w ith a cane, a formidable looking" weapon. The Beniors smashed the hat, but not until several of them had bwn laid out by the blows from Dudley's club. Dudley drew his revolver and threatened to shoot the next senior that laid hands on him. The other juniors supported Dudley and a tight was imminent, when the city marshal, assisted by citizens and several professors, quelled the disturbance. S. Sander-hill- , one of the railroad commissioners of Faroo, North Dakota, resides at Antelope, west of the Missouri river. He reports a deplorable condition of affairs among the ranchmen in his district resulting from the recent and almost unprecedented prairie tires. Between Hart and Cannon Ball rivers and in the valleys of both, the destruction has been almost complete, while about Killduer mountain nothing is left for the stock to live upon. At Riverside ranch, nt the mouth of Little Hart river, tive hundred tons of hay and three hundred head of cattle were burned. At Parkins' ranch, on Cannon Ball river, the loss was heaviest. Wickes' ranch loss everything except the buildings. In all the settlements m the valleys of Hart Cannon Ball and Knife river, the loss has been heavy, the fire traveling with such fury as to go completely through the villages. In almost every instance in the valleys small farmers have lost their crops and feed for the winter. The wind blew a hurricane. At Riverside ranch breaks of eight hundred feet in width wore made where the flames leaped over. The ranchmen are inclined to lay these fires to the Indians of Fort Yates reservation, who come up into the valleys and drive game south, burning the prairies behind them toprevent the game from going back. The ranchmen propose to take the matter before the authorities to prevent a rejietition. Case Dismissed. Dublin. Oct 11.
