Show 1U HILL TOP TIMES Friday, October 24, 1986 Week honors Native Americans In observance of American IndianAlaskan Native Heritage Week, Oct. 1, there will be an End of the Harvest Banquet from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, at the Noncom26-No- panied by an interpreter for the hearing impaired. Tickets may be purchased for $7 per person from organization representatives or the EEO Office, Ext. 75731 or 77241. No tickets will be sold or picked up at the door. The evening's entertainment will feature Native American dancers performing traditional dances and guest speaker Wil Numkena of the Utah State Office of Education. Over the years, Mr. Numkena has received several honors, including president of the Tribe of Many Feathers at Brigham Young University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He was vice president of the Hopi Senom Club at Northern Arizona University from September 1967 to May 1968. His community service includes current membership on the board of directors for the Indian Alcohol Counseling and Recovery House, Salt Lake City, and member of the advisory board for Graduate School of Social Work, University of Utah. He also has served on the board of directors for the Utah Native American Consortium, the Native American Humanities program and and a member of the advisory board for the the Harvest banquet has taken what he has lived and learned to help his native people. Wilfred Numkena, a special assistant for Indian Education for the Utah State Office of Education, received his diploma from Bear River High School in Tremohton in May 1962. Since then, he has earned a master's of education from Pennsylvania State University and has spent many years educating students of predominantly Native American school districts. Mr. Numkena began his teaching career with a Headstart program in Kaibeto, Ariz. From there, he worked with a similar program in Tonalea, Ariz., and, in 1973, as a career education specialist for the Hopi Tribe, also in Arizona. Mr. Geisler has had an interest in Native American history since his youth and now commemorates their heritage in much of his personal paintings and sculpture. The artifacts will be on display during the "End of the Harvest" banquet to be held Nov. 1 at the Noncommissioned Officers' Club.
