Division of Wildlife Resources Fisheries Chief Bruce Schmidt said, "Trout growth has declined in Panguitch Lake recently. The increase in the size of stocked fish should take care of the problem." Chub problems are not new to Panguitch Lake. The lake was chemically treated in 1973 to remove chubs. Fishing success followed but the chubs reappeared in 1982, probably a result of the illegal use of live minnows as bait. "Chub numbers have increased dramatically in our gillnet samples in the last few years," said Dale Hepworth, fisheries manager in the southern region. "We knew we could eventually have a problem when we first found that chubs were back in the lake." Mr. Schmidt said the timing of the chub problem at Panguitch was "particularly poor." "The slowdown in fishing is happening right after the new Learn about hunting Hunters are invited to learn more about the sport at a meeting scheduled at 7 p.m. on Sept. at the Thornton Recreation Center, building 460, and the Small Arms Rifle Range at Hill AFB. Mr. Schmidt said the new stocking program should result in increased catches of small fish this fall and winter, with good fishing restored by spring year-roun- d year-roun- 1987. Military and civilian personnel may sign up in the Ticket and Tour Office of the Thornton Recreation Center. The course teaches the basics of gun safety, different situations encountered in the field and hunter etiquette. It's state law that everyone 21 and under must take the course if they plan to go hunting for the first time. |
