"We lost one complete day of operation and one morning," said Maj. Phil Lowe, chief of wing inspections. "But our exercise was still successful because we were able to accomplish certain events in spite of the weather." 3, The exercise simulated battlefield conditions in a European environment, he added, which included airfield attacks and chemical warfare defense measures. Airfield attacks were simulated by jet fighter overflights of the airfield, followed by sound burst simulators and smoke charges. He said .the overflights added to the realism of the scenario. "What we're looking for is the wing's reaction to the attack," he explained. "We want our people to be aware of the threat, then react accordingly. Major Lowe said the wing was scheduled to fly more than 1,000 sorties during the exercise, but said the bad weather Thursday and Friday forced the wing to cancel flying for safety reasons, and that cost the exercise almost 650 sorties. "We did the maximum we could do against the weather," he said. The 388th conducts at least three operational readiness exercises annually. mmm. Wi)Wm r f ; 1: i ' JSif ' ...
