Show 10 HILLTOP TIMES Friday, May 25, 1984 memorial uay m es sages From General Mullins From President Reagan In his Memorial Day message, President Reagan said, Today America honors those who have died in the ser-.yiof their country. The voices of fallen friends and loved ones still echo in our ears, and the wounds left by their passing have yet to heal. ce "Each day we enjoy the freedom these brave Americans fought and died to preserve. We are comforted by the spirit of courage and patriotism they left behind. We see and feel these qualities all around us when we pledge allegiance to our flag or join together to sing our national anthem. We are particularly aware otthem when we celebrate this special day and honor the memory of those we have lost." Mr. Reagan went on to say that the men and women of the armed forces exemplify that spirit. "You uphold the proud tradition of all those in uniform who went before you," he said. Your daily efforts around the world demonstrate your commitment to ensure that those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice 'shall not have died in vain.' " President Reagan asked Americans to join him in renewing.their pledge to keep the nation strong, free and at peace. "There can be no better way of honoring our military heroes, both living and dead," he said. "May God bless you and all you do for all of us." (AFNS) Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, is the time set aside in this country for Americans to collectively honor their war dead. And for our society, this holiday is very special, because it not only represents a kind of spiritual bond between the living and the dead it also stands for the shared values and commonly held beliefs around which our democracy was built. ' In fact, those members of America's armed forces who have fallen in combat, did not do so while attempting to expropriate foreign lands, or place in bondage their fellow human beings. Quite the contrary, they made the ultimate sacrifice for the noblest of human causes: preserving liberty. That's why I believe that those who have given their lives in the defense of freedom symbolize perhaps the greatest truth of all that there are some things in life worth dying for. And as long as we have the courage to face up to the harsh realities of life, and to fight, if need be, for what this nation stands for, then life will continue to be worth living. (LOGNEWS) - GEN.
