Dear Beaver County School Board, I just finished reading Nancy Carter's letter to you in the Milford Monitor dated September 1, 1995. It really upset me when she said that Milford High School is always the school that gets all the cuts in the school district. I feel that this statement is very untrue. Who received a brand new tract in the district without anyone in Beaver even knowing about it until it was completely finished. The people of Beaver certainly did not. Milford High only has about 0 students who participate in track and Beaver High has about 75-- 1 00 students who participate in the program and do we have a fancy brand new track No! I know that two years ago our track people were not even allowed to go down and practice on the track in Milford before Region and State Track. Our students were bused to Cedar to practice on the track at the SUU track to improve our abilities, but did our kids give up and bawl about they continued on and improved to the best of their abilities and we have taken 1 st, 2nd, or 3rd place in both girls and boys state 2A four or five years while practicing on a dirt track. I am sick and tired of the people of Milford thinking they are always getting the raw end of the deal in our ' district. Yes, you have good 20-3- it-- No! children and your children deserve the best also, but so do we have good children and we certainly do not always get everything for our children. Just look at the high schools, for example. Milford High students are at least in their new high school and Beaver's is hardly even finished. It is that my understanding Milford's new high school cost 3:5 million dollars for a little over 100 students. Beaver's new high school is double the size of Milford and it has cost 4.5 million for over 400 students to attend. Who is getting the cut on the schools? Not Milford of course. Also, Milford Elementary has a brand new faculty room and Beaver Elementary has not been remodeled for years. Beaver Elementary is so over crowded that our teachers do not even have a faculty room. And furthermore, our children in Beaver Elementary will not even go to the bathroom all day, because the restrooms are in such bad condition. They say they are gross! "f Ana tor you Nancy, I do not blame vou for wanting more for your students. Children do deserve the very best. It is my understanding that you cannot participate in high school Softball is and baseball because you are a 1A school and they play baseball in the fall. This is a Utah Activities ruling not Beaver County School Board's. Please do not fell that your school is picked on any worse than any other school in the district. If we want to throw rocks, I think every school in this district could throw a few. At times it Expected Occupancy. Description of Use Or Project Milford Elementary (2) Portable Rooms Aug. All I can say for is please make the best of what we have and teach your children to do the same. Quit feeling sorry for yourselves and thinking that Beaver High School has everything. We do not. If we keep throwing negative and thoughts attitudes around our county, what find of a place are we going to have for our children to be raised, At the suggestion of the State School Board, Beaver District officials looked into the future to estimate minimum local needs. "Welcome emblazoned across all our schools this month (or last month if you're on You're welcome here. ). We want you. Come in. That's exactly how excited teachers feel about that new class. But there's others we need to welcome And we aren't always as excited about the prospect of du! year-round- welcoming parents. Because there is always at least one time in a teacher's career when he or she was intimidated by a parent. A parent who was angry. A parent who was frustrated. A parent who seemed to blame the teacher for the student's faults. And so while we say that we will welcome parents into our school halls and classrooms, in the back of our minds, there's the fear that the only ones who will come are the ones who will be angry and critical, and so we don't always reach out. We sometimes say the words, "You're welcome here" behind a closed door. And many parents don't come. They don't come to school because in the life of a parent there's at least one time when he or she has been intimidated by a teacher A teacher who was angry. A teacher who was frustrated. A teacher who seemed to blame the parents for the student's faults. For some parents the only lime they talk to a teacher is when their child is failing or misbehaving. And so they say they want to be involved, but in the back of their minds, there's the fear that . Experience. they will face teachers who are angry and critical, and so they always . reach back, even when invited. What a loss! What wasted importunities! Parents, put your tears away Walk up to your child's teachers and shake their hands. Let them know you intend to support them. Ask them if there's anything you could be doing at home to help your children gain more from their instruction. Tell them you expect to hear from them if there are concerns, but that you would also appreciate knowing when something great happens so that ytw can acknowledge it at home. Teachers, make a phone call. Tell those nervous parents that you're glad to have their child in class and that you're excited about the year. I ,et them know you intend to support them Ask them if there's anything' you should know about how best their child learns so thai you can make your lessons more meaningful to them them know you WANT them to call you when they have questions or concerns and that your door is always open. The beginning of a school has a new feel. A feeling of year anticipation and nervousness and curiosity. While that feeling is still giving kids butterflies in their stomachs over meeting new kids and trying to lit in, let's meet each other with trust and without fear, and let's make the , partnership between and concerned parents caring teachers a perfect fit.
