Show V Btautr NOVEMBER 13, 1997 (Ecimtp fHnnitnr MHS Wall of Fame tyttoBarnes Hughes was born on September 7, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mary Hughes and Arthur Onin Williams. He has two brothers, Du Wayne and Valjean and one sister, Alice. The family moved to Milford when he was a small boy where he attended grammar school and graduated from Milford High School Hughes graduated from Utah State University, Logan, Utah, with a B.S. degree in Agronomy, and completed work for his M.S. Hughes spent four years in the service. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the 2 program, later switching to the Navy. With the rank of Ensign, he served in the Pacific Theater as Gunnery Officer on a Fleet Mine Sweeper and was honorably discharged in March of 1946. He was always grateful that he could serve his country. Hughes and his wife, Peggy, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994. They have three sons, two daughters, and two foster sons. They have 28 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He I was always a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Arthur Hughes Williams Outstanding in ward and stake church callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, Hughes served in many positions including Bishop and High Councilman. He was always active in Unit, District and Council work in the Boy Scouts of America, and was awarded his Wood Badge Recognition and Silver Beaver Award. He was a strong civic leader, and very active in the California Farm Bureau. Hughes served as a Center and County president on various State Board committees. Counseling many young men as to educational opportunities in agriculture, Hughes ran a program which provided work for young men going on missions for his church. He also arranged work schedules for young men which provided employment while they attended college. Hughes has traveled extensively doing research and advisory work for foreign programs, especially in Africa, Japan and the Philippines. He has developed programs to help feed the hungry people in foreign countries. He has helped bring in and train young men from other countries over and above his normal working hours. Much of this was at his expense and from the goodness of his heart. His life's work has been improving rice varieties. Hughes developed some of the leading varieties of rice in the world today. He spent over 43 years in rice research in California, Hawaii, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. He had over 50,000 varieties of rice under research. Hughes was acclaimed as ONE OF THE TOP SIX Rice Researchers in the world. A victim of Alzheimer's Disease, Hughes resides in an all Alzheimer nursing facility in Texas. He has excellent care, is loved and highly regarded as a brilliant man who has made a read difference in this world. Once again the hospital will be humoring your loved ones by providing space and electricity in front of the hospital for your trees. Let lis tfetp Jou Make Jour Holiday feast 'Easier Please have your trees decorated and at the hospital beginning the week of November 24th. We would like to have the lights on by the st of December. Please bring tent stakes, rebar or some kind of guide wires to secure your tree. We had some trouble last year with the WIND and found out that if we ran guide wires they were a lot more stable. Last year was a big success and the community was very supportive. We are anticipating and preparing for an even better response this year.
