If anything, the harvest should surpass last year's harvest since hot, dry weather during last elk season made for difficult hunting and preserved some bulls for this year. The southern end of the state in particular had difficult hunting conditions last year as illustrated by low harvests from Beaver Mountain (26 bulls), Boulder Mountain (22 bulls); and Mount Dutton (7 bulls). Bulls not harvested last year will be available to hunters this year, so harvest numbers as well as average size could very well increase. Already weather conditions have been cooler and molster than last fall, so hunting conditions should be better, but as any experienced elk hunter would know, don't expect as easy hunt. Elk hunting is one of the most difficult and challenging of any of the big game hunts and there are a fair number of elk hunters who have never even seen a bull during the season after several years of hunting. It has become a popular hunt among Utah hunters, however, and should continue to improve and become even more popular In the future. de vested has increased dramatically, with the highest increases In harvest coming during the last few years. During the last four years, the total elk harvest in Utah had averaged over 5,000. Last year, 5,114 elk were harvested by rifle hunters In the state, 3,882 of which were harvested by open bull hunters. Statewide, open bull hunters enjoyed a relatively high hunter success rate of 15. On a local level, elk hunting is enjoyed by many of the Beaver County big game hunters, especially since Beaver Mountain was opened to open bull elk hunting in 1984. Beaver Mountain still has a relatively small elk herd when compared to such areas as Manti Mountain and Fishlake, but it is popular among local hunters because Llonu ' : nt 387-247- 6; 387-550- 9; 387-248- 6; 387-270- 7; 387-237- 9. to.-.e- s MILFORD s 2,-j.-.- i SCHOOL lunch y, Beaver County News Ptii-!i-!- ,:r 1 ;. I mean let's examine the facts for a moment. Here, on one hand, we have a one million acre forest) fire being fought by over 9,000 expert fire fighters from all over: the country; on the other hand, a couple of cabinet members fly In and spend the night at West Yel lowstone. Lo and behold, when they get up the next morning the snow is on the ground and the fire Is practically out! I am impressed. The presidential candidates really missed a bet, though. Can you Imagine how much credibility the - could have gained if Bush would have flown the Yellowstone Park to save the bushes and trees and if Cuayle would have gone to save the birds and the animals? Now they will have to claim that it was their Idea to send Secretary Hodel and company. The Democrats will undoubtedly dispute that claim, how ever, and say that the Republicans would not have done anything at all if so much ruckus hadn't been raised by the Demos over the Park Services fire fighting policy! If the weather should change again and the fire flares back up, it will all be blamed on "an act of God." Can you imagine how much fun evangelists Jackson and Robertson could have had with this issue if they were the candidates? Now that the administration has just about single handedly extinguished the forest fires, perhaps they will turn their talents to battle the hurricanes that are forming up on the Florida coast and who knows? We might be able to resurrect the earthquake scare in California for Mr. Hodel to visit. The Democrats wouldn't etand a chance after that! Reagan might even be able to swing a third term!
