I think everyone has had one of these in their home at one time or another, or at least seen the pair of old gnarled hands poised in a praying position that seem to come up out of the stand, pleading for some unspoken wish. Our praying hands somehow fell from the shelf one day and a small piece of plaster was broken off the base. The praying hands suddenly became the "diving hands," looking just like the hands of someone who was about to take the plunge from the high dive board. Visitors to our home would take a quick second look as they realized someone was about to dive off the bookshelf into the sofa. "Uhh, interesting statue, Stur-man- ," they would comment while trying to avoid looking pulled, "What is it called?" "Surely you jest ," I would answer in my most authoritarian voice, "You don't recognize 'Man at the Pool' by Antoine Geugob? "Oh of course, I thought it looked familiar," they would lie, trying to avoid any confrontation that may prove embarrasing until they could get to the museum to che-- k it out. Tiring of this constant charade, I tried to give "The hands" away last weekend when all the kids were home for our youngest daughter's .wedding. Every ungrateful child of "ours refused to iake the hands home with them. Obviously, there was only one thing left to do. I hid them in one of the suitcases. Unfortunately, there were soon discovered and passed on to another brother. He found them epoxied to the hood of his pick-u- p as a hood ornament. Before the day was over, another sibling discovered them vr armed up v his pajamas. Tl..were passed back and forth two days. "I'd sure like to see son.e a'" you kid's get your hands w: hoping with the dishes," their it)"hc-complained, "The Han Is" shov I ap in the dishwater. "Give me a hand with twse wedding gifts," I ma ie the mist aw .:f saying. I got two haws, iusfeiJ.
