Stress is part of life, and part of growing up is learning to deal with it, Korch notes. Problems arise when stress is over- -, whelming or when there are no skills outlets or support to cope with it. Single-parefamilies, and dual -- income families are "susoeptfcle to more stress by definition," says Korsch. But other situations also overburden children. Parents put pressure on their kids by expecting them to excel in every area, from the classroom to the playing field. Before a problem gets serious, parents should help their kids learn to handle stress by encour step-famili- es AND is gives them coping strength." Since charcoal was vital to the smelters as a fuel and flux, charcoal burning and wood cutting became a very lucrative business to hundreds of citizens from Beaver, Minersville and Milford. The unusual design of these charcoal kilns appear to be patterned after some made by J.C. Cameron in Marquette County, Michigan around 1868. The charcoal kilns near Frisco and Newhouse were usually made of granite cobbles cemented with lime mortar, while adobe bricks were sometimes used in the archways. The kilns vary in size from 16 to 26 feet in diameter, and have openings high in the back for loading wood, and doorways in the front for removing the charcoal. The 1 6 foot kilns would hold 15 cords of wood, while the 26 foot kilns would hold about 45 cords each. In 1880, a cord of wood brought $1.25, and was hauled by wagons or sleds to the kilns. Once the kilns were loaded with wood, it took from three to seven days for burning and another 3 to 6 days for cooling. About 50 bushels of charcoal were produced from each cord of wood. The charcoal was then sold to the smelters for .18 cents a bushel. It can be estimated from the 1880 production records over 3,524 cords of wood were needed to fire the smelter at Frisco for a one year Visiting John and Betty Jimenez over the week-en- d were LuAnnHass, her children, Daniel and Jackie; her foreign exchange student from Norway, Per Dagslett.
